Dinesh Karthik mentioned former skipper keeper MS Dhoni’s name while analyzing the reason behind the struggles of two Indian wrist spinners. Few years back, Indian spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav were on top of their game, winning important games for Team India, especially in the shortest format of the game.

However, for the past couple of years, both players have struggled to find consistent form, which has been compounded by their lack of playing time. India cricketer Dinesh Karthik analyzed the reasons behind their struggle after the 2019 World Cup in England.

Dinesh Karthik: MS Dhoni’s Absence Reason Behind Spin Duo Of Yuzvendra Chahal And Kuldeep Yadav’s Dip In Form

Dinesh Karthik, who is not a part of the Indian set-up at the moment, said that the absence of MS Dhoni behind the wickets has definitely played a part in their dip in form.

“I think that the advent of their bowling has dipped because somebody like MS Dhoni has not been there post the (2019) World Cup. I’ve seen how much he helped them. They don’t need help when the going gets good or they’re bowling and getting beaten, or when they don’t know which way the bowl will turn,” Karthik said.

Dinesh Karthik stated that whenever Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav struggled to hit the right line and length, MS Dhoni’s “words of wisdom” had always helped the spinners more often than not.

“But when somebody hits a slog-sweep or just plays the reverse-sweep, then you have the wise words of wisdom coming from a man who has so much experience and they love him so much. They (are) worth the weight in gold,” he said.

The duo was a regular member of the Indian white-ball squad between 2017 to 2019. Both achieved great success under Virat Kohli’s captaincy with support from MS Dhoni behind the stumps.

Meanwhile, off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has roared back into the limited-overs format after an excellent display at the 2021 T20I World Cup and was picked in the ODI side for South Africa tour for the first time since 2017. He last played for India in the format in June 2017 in West Indies but fell out of favour as the wrist spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav were preferred ahead of him. But he picked only 1 wicket in the first 2 ODIs.

The 36-year-old added that while Virat Kohli was the captain in most of the games, Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav were listening to MS Dhoni more.

“Virat Kohli could’ve been the captain in many of those matches, but who were they listening to? Definitely MS Dhoni. They trusted him completely. He really guided them well,” Karthik added.

Both Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal were dropped from India’s squad for the 2021 T20I World Cup last year. While Yuzvendra Chahal did make a return to the team after the tournament, Kuldeep Yadav has not played for India since the white-ball series against England last year at home.

Yuzvendra Chahal currently played the ODI series against South Africa. He picked just 2 wickets in the series playing all 3 ODIs. His dip in form can be gauged from the fact that he took 16 wickets the last time India played an ODI series in South Africa in 2018. Kuldeep Yadav took 17 as together they took 33 wickets in the series with MS Dhoni part of that series as well.

Kuldeep Yadav is the only Indian bowler to take two ODI hat-tricks and his T20I record isn’t bad either with 41 wickets in 23 games with an economy of 7.15. Having marked his debut across formats in 2017, he became the fastest spinner (in terms of innings) for India to clock 100 ODI wickets. In ODIs, he has 107 scalps besides his name in 65 games averaging 28.34.
