Dream11 Might Not Be The Get IPL 2020 Title Sponsorship Despite Being Highest Bidder: Reports

On Tuesday, Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman Brijesh Patel informed that Dream11 has emerged as the highest bidder for the title sponsorship with offering INR 222 crore. But, as per reports, BCCI would have to look into other factors before confirming the deal. Also, the Indian board hasn’t yet issued a press release to confirm Dream11 as new title sponsor of IPL 2020, commencing from 19th September to 10th November.

As per reports in India today, the Dream11’s bid is for 3 years, starting from 2020 until 2022 edition. But the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is not ready to accept it as a three-year deal. The reason being that the original sponsors Vivo had only pulled out for this year’s title sponsorship and they are paying much more than Dream11’s deal for the next editions. But the online gaming app has put forward to extend the deal for three years.

The Chinese mobile brand Vivo had bagged IPL’s title sponsorship for INR 2,199 crore (Rs 440 crore annually) in 2017 for five years. But they suspended this year’s deal after there was the outcry of boycotting Chinese product after the violent clash between India and China which killed 20 Indian soldiers.

However, BCCI is willing to retain Vivo for the next years because they would earn more profit than Dream11’s bid for three years. So, they might mull over the decision before offering the final deal to the fantasy sports platform.

Also, notably, the BCCI had made it clear when it called for Expressions of Interest (EOI) on August 10 that they might not offer the IPL title sponsor deal to the highest bidder as the decision is subject to change because of the prevailing situations.

Here is BCCI’s statemtent:

For the avoidance of doubt, it is clarified that BCCI shall not be obliged to award the Rights to the third party which indicates willingness to pay the highest fees in the course of discussions/ negotiations with BCCI after submitting an EOI,”

“BCCI’s decision in this regard will also depend on a number of other relevant factors, including but not limited to, the manner in which the third party intends to exploit the Rights and the potential impact of the same on brand IPL as also the fan/ viewer experience, which will be examined/ evaluated by BCCI in the course of discussions/ negotiations with interested third parties who submit an EOI,” the BCCI said in a release.

As per sources, BCCI had two options to come to a conclusion. The board can either ask the Dream11 to increase the bid for the 2021 and 2022 edition or agree for one year deal.

The second option can be that the Indian board pull down Dream 11 from the race and go with some other company which is willing to come forward for IPL title sponsorship rights.

Tellingly, although BCCI and Vivo had mutually suspended IPL 2020’s title sponsorship, the initial contract is still on so Chinese brands can come back and continue to serve as the sponsor for this year.

The other Indian brands that are in bidding race are online education platforms BYJU’s had submitted a bid of Rs 201 crore and Unacademy who bid Rs 170 crore. Tata sons and Baba Ramdev’s company Patanjali are also being counted, potential bidders.
