The young fast bowler from England Jofra Archer will be auditioning for a World Cup berth in the upcoming ODI series against Ireland and Pakistan. England skipper Eoin Morgan confirmed that Archer will debut for England in the one-off ODI against Ireland. Also, the top-ranked ODI side are in line to hand two more debut caps to Ben Foakes and Dawid Malan. Despite all these, the main topic of discussion was over Alex Hales ban over the use of the recreational drug.
Morgan was clear when asked about Hales’ action. England skipper admitted that he feels let down by Hales and that he is no longer a part of that setup. Since their dismal run in the last World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, England have witnessed an upsurge in their performance. Led by the terrific Eoin Morgan, they will enter this marquee event as the top-ranked ODI side which speaks volume of the performance in the last four years.
However, a recent flurry of injuries just before the World Cup have put a lot at stake. England have rested their senior cricketers ahead of the World Cup and injury to Jason Roy means some new face will make their way in. Malan and Foakes probably require injuries to crack the final World Cup squad on 23 May but Joe Denly, set to win his first cap in the format for 10 years, and James Vince, down to play here and against Pakistan, must keep it this way.
However, all eyes in on Jofra Archer, for whom England ultimately changed their qualification rules to bring in the Barbados-born cricketer. Should he make a mark here and against Pakistan, the 24-year-old has every chance of leapfrogging incumbents. The Hales storm has helped him, too, stealing a touch of the spotlight ahead of the series. Eoin Morgan sounded about Jofra Archer’s inclusion has few fears over Archer’s integration into the squad.
“There’s a huge amount of expectation on us as a team, never mind individuals. I think that’s part and parcel of being the No 1 side in the world. It creates a level of expectation and it’s quite cool because we’ve created that. It’s not just come out of blowing smoke – it’s through performance. It’s actually made us strive to continue to be better and hopefully that does that for him,” Morgan said.
In conclusion, Eoin Morgan showered praise on Ireland – the country he once represented. After a tough last week, England will be keen to make some happy memories in the cricket field.
