Five Instances When ICC Rules Affect Teams at the World Cup

Beyond World Cups, the teams have had been robbed off either by glaring errors or by ICC Rules in itself. Recently, England had clinched their maiden trophy by hitting more boundaries than New Zealand at historic Lord’s Stadium in London.

The game got tied post hundred overs, so as in the Super Oval on July 14 at Lord’s. Arguably, the enticing finale of the World Cup had witnessed plenty with the pendulum swinging from to and fro.

Meanwhile, post World Cup, the critics are slamming ICC’s for the farcical rules.

Anyway, it would be harsh to say that the teams had lost their games due to some hard regulations at the World Cup, but it would be a bit fair to say that those teams were deserving not to be on the losing side either when it comes to the World Cup events.

Let’s have a look at those five occasions when ICC rules had affected teams at the World Cup:

July 14, 2019, might haunt the Kiwis until the 2023 World Cup which is scheduled in India. New Zealand had oodles of luck to make it to the semi-finals before beating India following a solid show.

In the grand-finale, the low-scoring thriller had made everyone to talk about cricket. Also, the social media was abuzz with ICC’s rule book with many disagreeing on the decision. But again, the rule was already applicable.

In the finale, the regular 100 overs had witnessed an enticing battle with both bat and ball. And then, the Super Over had also seen a tie. Everyone had gone crazy before hosts England lifted their first-ever World Cup title on the virtue of most boundaries. Overall, they have scored 26 boundaries including two sixes as the Black Caps managed just 17.

England vs South Africa – 1992 World Cup, Semi-Final:

In their first ICC World Cup, South Africa had played top-class to make it to the semis. The Benson and Hedges World Cup had witnessed plenty before luck favoured England.

After losing the toss, England managed 252 for six in 45 overs. South Africa had also faced slow-over rate fine which already saw overs being curtailed in the first innings.

In reply, the Proteas put up the decent effort with the bat. At one stage, South Africa required 48 off 30 deliveries when they had four wickets in hand.

In between Brian McMillan and David Richardson had played an imperative role to make the task a bit easier. At one stage, the Proteas required 13-ball 22 before rain halted the game for a brief period.

Interestingly, the target was revised that the Proteas need 22 off seven balls. However, moments later target was adjusted to 22 off a solitary delivery.

Thus, it has irked the fans who had lashed out at ICC’s rule book which eventually cost South Africa their final berth.

In the ICC’s major events, South Africa had been on the receiving end. The Proteas were dubbed as ‘chokers’. On March 3, 2003, South Africa had suffered another major setback when they were playing on their home soil.

In the all-important clash, the Proteas had suffered heartbreak when rain-hit game witnessing Shaun Pollock paying a massive price before the game ended in a tie.

With overcast conditions in Durban, the Duckworth Lewis method suggested South Africa need to score 229 for a tie.

Also, the Proteas had an early celebration when wicketkeeper-batsman and Lance Klusenar were batting in the middle.

Pertinently, before denying a run, Boucher had hit a maximum on the bowling of Muttiah Muralitharan. The Proteas short-lived the celebration when the rain had poured down.

Pakistan’s Semi-Final Scenario:

Pakistan had played worst cricket in the first half of the ICC World Cup 2019. In their World Cup opener, the Men in Green had lost their game by seven wickets after folding out at 105.

Moreover, they lost their games to Australia and India. Besides, they had registered a strong comeback by winning the last consecutive four games.

Interestingly, they were at par with New Zealand at 11 points, but Kiwis got better to make it as the fourth semi-finalist of the twelfth edition of the World Cup.

So much so, former Pakistan cricketers and fans had criticised the rule as Pakistan bowed out of the tournament with five wins in nine league stage matches.

Australia vs South Africa – 1999 World Cup:

In the semi-final clash against Australia, South Africa had registered a tie, but there had faced an exit due to the poor net run-rate.

The Proteas bowlers had bowled outstandingly well which further saw them restricting Australia’s strong batting line-up. However, skipper Steve Waugh and veteran batsman Michael Bevan had slammed fifty apiece.

Besides, during bowling Kangaroos saw legendary leg-spinner pulling things back for them with a four-wicket haul.

In the thrilling semis, Lance Klusenar did his best, which further saw the Proteas required one run off four deliveries.

Amid a pressure-cooker situation, Allan Donald had made a mess after Klusenar had miscued a shot. Following the chaos, Donald had scampered for a single who was found shot at the striker’s end only to be well short of his crease. Thus, it meant the game had culminated on a tie with Australia making it to the grand finale based on better net run-rate.
