George Rhodes Believes Ravichandran Ashwin’s Appearance Boost up Worcestershire
The Director of Cricket for Worcestershire, George Rhodes has heaped praise on India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin after benefiting the English County side on his maiden stint for the long-established club.
Rhodes expressed satisfaction after his masterstroke while terming Ashwin as the ‘brilliant’ overseas signing.
“It was a massive surprise to the dressing room that we managed to get such a brilliant cricketer to come and be our overseas player. Just that alone is enough to lift the boys,” Rhodes was quoted as saying by Worcestershire Observer.
The 31-year-old bowling all-rounder Ashwin has played a pivotal part, as he played four first-class matches since August 28.
“He speaks and talks a very good game but he should do because he is very experienced and has done some amazing things in international cricket,” Rhodes maintained.
The experienced campaigner Ashwin owing to all round has boosted the morale of the youngsters in the side at New Road.
“His character, the way he plays his cricket, was another good reason for lifting the rest of the dressing room so he has played a major part,” Rhodes said.
Moreover, Rhodes was the chief component to rope in Ashwin, after Worcestershire slouch during the recently concluded 2017 NatWest Twenty20 Blast.
“You watch him go out and bat and he is very positive. You watch him bowl and he is very positive in his efforts and what he tries to do,” Rhodes added.
It’s pertinent to mention, Ashwin has been the part of three matches which was eventually won by Pears, as they are just six points away to make it to the Division-One of the domestic circuits in England. The ace off-spinner Ashwin helped Worcestershire to clinch a Division Two trophy after his five-wicket-haul against Durham.
In the Specsavers County Championship, the promotion would play a huge part for the Worcestershire club. The promising all-rounder, George Rhodes Jr. on the other side, is excited to share the bench with Ashwin
“He is fantastic to have around. He is one of the best, if not the best Test spinner in the world so to be working so closely with him is just absolutely fantastic,” Rhodes jnr stated.
Rhodes believes Ashwin is helping him out as a bowler and he is aiming to make a mark by playing alongside Australia’s Nathan Lyon and New Zealand’s left arm spinner Mitchell Santer.
“Just to see how he [Ashwin] trains, how he works and how his mindset is, how to get players out and things like that,” Rhodes concluded.
Following his influence in the Worcestershire dressing room, Ashwin is also focusing on his fitness as he has struggled with a sports hernia in the recent past.
