Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan has stated that he is not mentally prepared to lead the team in any of the formats. Shakib needs to hold the captaincy reins for the one-off Test match against  Afghanistan. However, the talismanic all-rounder has said that he has no interest to lead Bangladesh in any of the three formats.

Meanwhile, Shakib also understands the fact that the team is not in the best shape and he has the responsibility to get it on the right path. On the other hand, Shakib Al Hasan believes that if he focuses on himself, it would be more beneficial for the team.

“I am not even mentally prepared to lead in Tests and T20s,” the all-rounder said to newspaper Prothom Alo.

“In fact, I am not really interested in leading in any format. I can focus on myself if I am not captaining, which would help the team.

“But the team is not in good shape, so I understand that I have to lead to get it back on track.”

Meanwhile, Shakib Al Hasan believes that the young generation should be bestowed with responsibility. The talismanic all-rounder added that the young players will learn more when they have responsibility on their shoulders.

Time to look at the future.

“I want to see the younger lot to take responsibility. We [Shakib and Mushfiqur Rahim] got captaincy at a very young age, but they have now turned 26, 27.

“Unless you give them responsibility, you won’t know what they can do. The World Test Championship and T20 World Cup are up ahead, so we should plan for the next four years.”

On the other hand, Bangladesh’s ODI captain Mashrafe Mortaza had a mundane World Cup as he could scalp a solitary wicket. Hasan believes it had an impact on the whole team as the captain was not able to deliver the goods with the ball.

Mortaza had a terrible World Cup.

“I had the belief that we could go further in this World Cup and it may have been possible if we had contributions from everyone,” he said.

“When a player doesn’t perform, he thinks more about himself than the team, which creates the problem. I think it happened in Mashrafe bhai’s case.

“It was a big issue, for himself and the team, that the captain wasn’t performing. The captain has to perform, but we were behind in that aspect.”
