I Did Not Demand To Be Included In World Cup Squad – AB de Villiers
Former South African skipper AB de Villiers has lashed out at his criticism. It was reported during the World Cup that AB de Villiers was trying to get into South Africa’s squad through the back door just before the World Cup. However, de Villiers has come up with his side of the story as South Africa’s World Cup campaign is over.
In fact, it was revealed by South African convenor Linda Zondi that de Villiers had asked to be considered for selection before the World Cup. However, the team management took the mutual decision to not include him as it would have been unfair on the other players, who were playing regularly.
AB de Villiers comes up with his side of the story.
“On the day of my [retirement] announcement, I was privately asked whether ‘the door was still open’ for me to play in the World Cup,” de Villiers said in a statement, seen by ESPNcricinfo. “I was asked. But, I did not offer. I quickly replied ‘Yes’. With hindsight, maybe I should have just said no, but my natural instinct has always been to find a way to oblige whenever possible.
“During the weeks and months that followed, there was no formal contact between Cricket South Africa or the Proteas and me. I didn’t call them, and they didn’t call me. I had made my decision and the Proteas moved on, enjoying success under the expert guidance of coach Ottis Gibson and the outstanding captaincy of Faf du Plessis.
Meanwhile, it was also stated that AB de Villiers was asked to reconsider his retirement but he selected to play in the different T20 leagues across the globe. Consequently, de Villiers was blamed to be running for money ahead of playing for the country.
A bad example of poor management.
Now, AB de Villiers has revealed that he was himself asked by the selectors to come back from retirement and he said yes. South African skipper Faf du Plessis had also revealed that AB de Villiers had also called him before the World Cup selection.
“Faf and I have been friends since we were at school together and, two days before the World Cup squad was announced, I contacted him for a chat. I had been in decent form during the Indian Premier League and casually repeated what I had said when asked a year earlier, that I was available if required… but only if required.
“In fact, I made absolutely no demands at all. I certainly did not try to force my way into the World Cup squad on the eve of the tournament and did not expect to be included. There was no burning issue from my side and no sense of injustice.”
Meanwhile, South Africa had another sad end to their World Cup campaign. The Proteas lost five matches and won only three to finish at the seventh rank in the points table.
AB de Villiers also took to his Twitter account to come up with his side of the story.
