Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja played an impressive role during the semi-final of the ongoing Cricket World Cup. However, India just failed to win that match and finished their journey in that tournament. Recently, Jadeja’s wife has revealed his condition after that heartbreaking defeat.
Before the 2019 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, India was one of the hot favourites to win this trophy. Starting this tournament as the no.2-ranked ODI team, India dominated in the round-robin stages. India qualified for the semi-final of this tournament after finishing as the top-positioned team in the points table.
In the first semi-final of this tournament, India faced New Zealand, who finished in the fourth position in the points table. Though Ravindra Jadeja wasn’t a part in the playing XIs during the initial matches of this tournament, India team management finally relied on his experience during that big game.
However, Jadeja contributed well as a substitute fielder in that tournament. The semi-final match was Jadeja’s second game of this tournament as his first game in this tournament was against Sri Lanka in their final round-robin stage encounter.
In the rain-interrupted first semi-final, New Zealand batted first and managed to score 239/8 (50 overs). During that innings, Jadeja impressed with his bowling and fielding qualities. The left-arm spinner was very tight with the ball as he had the bowling figures of 10-0-34-1. Moreover, he made a splendid run-out with a direct hit from the deep mid-wicket. He also took two good catches in that innings.
Ravindra Jadeja scored 77 runs in the tough situation
Chasing down that target, India were in deep trouble from the beginning. With the time progress, India’s victory was moving far away as India were battling on 5/3, 24/4 and 92/6.
However, Jadeja wasn’t in a mood to give up easily. The left-handed batsman provided an incredible 116-run partnership along with MS Dhoni for the seventh wicket, and it helped India to fight back in that game.
Jadeja was dominating the Kiwi bowlers as the left-handed batsman scored 77 runs off 59 balls. He hit four fours and four sixes in that innings. When India were dreaming for a remarkable victory, Jadeja lost his wicket. During the left-arm New Zealand pacer Trent Boult’s final over, Jadeja was caught out at the long off. When Jadeja lost his wicket, India were battling on 208/7, and later, India scored 221 runs (49.3 overs) before losing their all wickets. India lost that semi-final by just 18 runs.
He was inconsolable after the loss – Rivaba Solanki on her husband
Recently, Jadeja’s wife Rivaba Solanki has revealed Jadeja’s condition after that game. Solanki has claimed that Jadeja was inconsolable after that match as he was blaming himself for that defeat.
Rivaba told Bombay TImes, “He was inconsolable after the loss and kept saying, ‘If I wouldn’t have got out, we could’ve won’. When you lose a match after coming this close, it really hurts and it will be a while before he comes to terms with it.”
Rivaba further added that Jadeja always performed in the crucial stages. She also brought the example of Jadeja’s performance during the final of 2013 ICC Champions Trophy.
Rivaba added, “If you look at his journey, he has always performed in crunch games, taking wickets and scoring vital runs. When we won the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013, he was the man of the match in the final for his all round performance.”
India won the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy after beating the hosts England in the final of that tournament. Jadeja played an impressive all-rounder role in that rain-interrupted match. In the crucial moment, the left-handed batsman scored India’s second highest runs in that match (33* off 25 balls). Later, the left-arm spinner had the bowling figures of 4-0-24-2.
