As the COVID-19 or coronavirus is still dominating the world, the fate of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2020 is moving to the doubtful condition. The International Cricket Council (ICC) is ready to organise a board meeting on 28th May where they are likely to decide the fate of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2020.
Australia will host the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2020, which has been scheduled between 18th October and 15th November 2020. A total of 16 teams will participate in this tournament.
But the coronavirus pandemic has opened up the doubtful future of this tournament. Many of the cricket families believe that it is tough to gather 16 teams together in this pandemic situation as they have raised their voices for the postponement of this tournament. Apart from international travelling issues, many also believe that the World Cup can’t follow the empty stadiums, which cricket has to follow now in this crisis.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has also hinted to give priority to the bilateral series rather than the World Cup after the resumption of the game.
While the fate of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2020 is likely to be discussed in the upcoming ICC board meeting via video conference, postponement of this tournament is one of the top options.
ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2020: This tournament can be shifted to early 2021 or 2022
ICC has already started to think about the other plans in the case of postponement of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2020. They have two alternative methods according to recent media reports, either shifting this tournament to the early 2021 (likely February-March) or organise this tournament in 2022.
As New Zealand will host the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2021 from 6th February to 7th March 2021, and India will host the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 in October-November 2021, there is a substantial possibility to shifting the forthcoming Men’s T20 World Cup tournament to 2022.
