ICC World Cup 2019: England Announce 15 Member Preliminary Squad, Jofra Archer Not Included
The hosts for the upcoming Cricket World Cup 2019, England have named their preliminary 15 member squad for the World Cup which is slated to be played in England and Wales from 30th May. Jofra Archer who had strengthened his case for a national call-up did receive his maiden ODI call-up for the ODI series against Pakistan but hasn’t been picked for the preliminary World Cup squad. He will remain in contention for a berth in the World Cup if he performs well in the series against Pakistan.
England will finalise their 15 member World Cup squad only after the conclusion of the Pakistan series on 19th May. The squad which has been announced has more or less been on the expected lines. The batting prowess of England in the last year or so has made them the No 1 team n the 50 overs format. The batting order looks more or less settled with the likes of Jonny Bairstow, Jason Roy, Joe Root, Eoin Morgan, Alex Hales covering the top order.
The bowling line-up consists of Chris Woakes, Mark Wood, Liam Plunkett, David Willey and Tom Curran. Joe Denly has received a surprising call-up. He is a fine batsman but he might just be the backup option for Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid.
Meanwhile coming back to Jofra Archer, he surely made a strong case for himself but you have to prefer those who have played for England in the past. Jofra Archer who was born in Barbados has completed his three-year qualification to become a British citizen on 17th March. It is for the first time Jofra Archer has been available for England selection. Jofra has a UK passport as his father is an Englishman.
“In line with ICC regulations, we have to name a preliminary squad of 15 for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup before April 23,” Ed Smith, ECB’s national selector, said on Wednesday. “However, all 17 players named in the Royal London ODI’s against Pakistan can stake a claim to be in the final 15-man squad, finalised at the end of that series.
“The selection panel has been impressed with Jofra Archer’s performances in domestic and franchise cricket. He is a very talented and exciting cricketer,” Smith said.
Meanwhile, Chris Jordan who has been out of the ODI side since September 2016 is back in the radar after putting up a good show against Sri Lanka and Windies in the T20I’s. Ed Smith feels that Chris Jordan has developed as a cricketer and it was only on the back of his performances against Sri Lanka and Windies that he received a call-up. Smith feels Jordan fully deserves a return to the ODI squad.
“Chris Jordan, a regular in IT20 squads over the past few years, has continued to develop as a cricketer – as we saw in the IT20s in the West Indies. He fully deserves his return to the ODI squad,” Smith said.
Meanwhile, the English selectors have also named a 14 member squad for the solitary ODI against Ireland and the T20I against Pakistan. The team management has decided to rest the likes of Jonny Bairstow, Moeen Ali, Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes for the two series. Meanwhile, Sam Billings and James Vince have been added to the squad for the two series.
“With regard to resting players, we are conscious of managing player workloads leading into such an important summer so that players are in the best possible condition for the World Cup,” Smith said. “That was also a factor in the way we have selected these three squads,” he was quoted as saying by the Cricbuzz.
