ICC World Cup 2019: Rishabh Pant Will Fly to England after Shikhar Dhawan’s Injury – Reports
According to a report, Rishabh Pant is set to board the United Kingdom-bound flight to join Team India for the ongoing ICC World Cup 2019. Pant, who recently lost his place to Dinesh Karthik is highly-likely going to join the World Cup squad post-Shikhar Dhawan’s hairline fracture in his thumb.
Unfortunately, the senior campaigner Dhawan has been ruled out for the maximum of three weeks from the ongoing World Cup. He had recently received a blow on his left thumb before the scans revealed a fracture. It’s considered as a major blow for India after Dhawan slammed a fine hundred against Australia. Thus, India won the game by 36 runs at the Oval on Sunday (June 9).
Dhawan writhed in pain after injuring his thumb on the bowling of speedster Pat Cummins when he was batting at The Oval. However, he struck a triple-figure mark before Ravindra Jadeja came as a substitute when Australia came to bat in the second half of the game.
Well, the reports suggested Dhawan will either miss out the ODI showpiece until July 2 or July 6 respectively when the Men in Blue will face Sri Lanka. It becomes pertinent that the grand finale of the World Cup is scheduled at Lord’s on July 14.
So, Dhawan’s injury has forced the team management according to the well-established newspaper, Times of India.
Pant to join Team India:
As per the source quoted by the ToI, Pant will replace Dhawan. The latter has been phenomenal in the ICC’s mega-events for the Men in Blue.
“Once all the details on Dhawan’s injury are out, the team management will put out an official request for a replacement. And that replacement is going to be Pant. The injury is bad enough to ask for a replacement,” a source revealed.
Earlier, Karthik has won the spot as a back-up wicketkeeper for Mahendra Singh Dhoni. However, the stroke of luck has brought Pant close to partaking in his first-ever ODI World Cup at the age of 21.
The southpaw is known for his aggressive style of play. Moreover, the Delhi-based batsman has left an early impact across formats. However, he couldn’t impress selectors much owing to his skills behind the stumps. But at the same time, many believe he will improve while donning the stumps.
Furthermore, in the absence of Dhawan, KL Rahul is expected to open the innings with Rohit Sharma. However, it’s to be seen whether Pant will play at No.4 or he will be demoted down the order.
“KL Rahul could move up the order and open the innings with Rohit Sharma, while Pant could be slotted in at No. 4. But that’s pretty much like thinking aloud now. We’ll weigh these options carefully,” sources added.
However, India will take on New Zealand on July 13 at the Trent Bridge. The reports maintained Pant could board the flight on Wednesday. Besides, India will face Pakistan in the marquee clash on June 16 at the Old Trafford in Manchester.
