ICC World Cup 2019: WAGs of India Players Not Permitted for the First 20 Days of Showpiece Event

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has taken a decision and finalised the policy of WAGs (wives and girlfriends of the players) for the upcoming 2019 ICC World Cup which is slated to be played in England and Wales from 30th May. The policy suggests that the wags can only join the players after the first 20 days of the tournament.

As per the new policy the wags cannot spend more than 15 days with the players during the course of the tournament which will continue for a month and a half. Families can only join the team after the first 20 days of the tournament. The Indian skipper Virat Kohli has also agreed to the policy.

“The top team management has discussed this 15-day provision and is on the same page on this arrangement,” a BCCI official confirmed.

Team India will be travelling to the England shores on 22nd May and will be well past their preparation phase. When the wags will join, India would have already played a couple of league games and are past their preparatory phase.

It has further been decided that the wags won’t travel in the team bus and will travel in a separate bus pr private transport as they wish. However, the players need to travel in the team bus and not with their partners which were the case during the last tour of England.

More than half of the Indian team members are married and the wags have been previously travelling with the team on the previous overseas tours as per the rules of BCCI in the past. However as it is a big tournament like the World Cup, the BCCI have preferred to keep it methodical.

There have been divided opinions in the team considering the presence of wags on overseas tours. While it adds more value to some players, it can also be a distraction for some of the cricketers. Team India skipper Virat Kohli had stated that the presence of his wife Anushka Sharma has always helped him perform better.

Speaking with teammate AB De Villiers for IPLt20.com, Kohli recently said, “That (marriage) has been the most strong factor in my life to change the way I was. Before, I was too intense in life. She (Anushka Sharma) always keeps me motivated, positive and we spend quality time with each other and get away from the game.”
