The outbreak of coronavirus has affected every cricket series and with the rising cases, the boards highly-likely may further cancel all the upcoming series. It has also put in danger the inauguration edition of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2019-21.
The Test Championship started last year in 2019 with the Ashes and the grand finale of the competition was scheduled in 2021 in June. The top two teams in the points table will fight for the coveted trophy at historic Lord’s. But due to pandemic, this year many Test series which falls under the Championship calendar have now been postponed. This will affect the whole schedule and International Cricket Council (ICC) reportedly have to reconsider or postpone the finale.
Grand finale of the ICC World Test Championship might be delayed:
An ICC spokesperson informed about the same to the news daily that they have proposed options and the council is still to make the final call.
“At present, the ICC is considering the options available to us regarding the World Test Championship and no decisions have been taken,” an ICC spokesperson said according to the Sydney Morning Herald.
India tops the points table:
India is currently at the top position with 360 points. Virat Kohli-led team has won seven matches out of nine. The two defeat came against New Zealand where India was clean swept 2-0 by the hosts.
Currently, the second position is held by Australia with 296 points. New Zealand and England hold the third and fourth positions with 180 and 140 points.
Meanwhile, another mega-event that is under danger is T20 World Cup 2020. The mega event is scheduled this year in October in Australia. Though October is far away, there is uncertainty over how long will it take the entire world to recover from this fiasco.
ICC will hold the meeting with all the 12-Test playing nations in order to decide the future of international cricket through video conference.
Also, the decision will be taken on organizing the T20 World Cup 2020 at the conference.
