India will take on West Indies in the WT20 2016 semi-final on Thursday night at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. Before this match, India and West Indies have met 3 times in WT20 where West Indies won twice and India have won only once.
The visitors West Indies have some good batsmen in the current squad but Chris Gayle is the biggest fear for any team in any format of a cricket match. In the Super 10 stage of WT20 2016, Gayle’s importance in the team was clearly seen against the Afghanistan match where West Indies suffered a stunning loss in Gayle’s absence.
Indian team has still not forgotten the 2010 WT20, where Gayle played a 98-run knock as India lost that game by 14 runs. In the WT20 2016 tournament, Gayle already hit a century and more scarily that was at Wankhede Stadium against England. So India needs to dismiss this dangerous left-handed batsman very early to win this match.
Indian cricketers know Chris Gayle very well due to IPL. The same reason can go against them as Gayle also knows Indian bowlers very well. So the fight will be very tough on the pitch. Indian bowlers can put Chris Gayle in trouble in many ways.
Some of these are briefly discussed in the following:
1) Gayle is uncomfortable against off-spinners. Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin dismissed him several times in IPL. Indian skipper MS Dhoni can bring Ashwin early on in the innings to put the left-handed batsman in trouble.
2) Nowadays, most of the time, Chris Gayle takes the time to settle down at the crease probably because his defense is not very strong. So, the beginning of innings is the best time to dismiss Gayle. Once Gayle settles down at the crease, it is very tough to stop him from destroying.
3) Chris Gayle is also not comfortable if anyone bowls him quick into his body. Gayle falls in trouble when quicker deliveries come into his thigh region.
4) If ball swings away, Chris Gayle faces trouble as he produces edges at these times.
