India’s spin duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal could not make the cut into the T20I squad for the upcoming series against South Africa. Both the spinners were also left out for the T20I series against West Indies. Consequently, chief selector, MSK Prasad has revealed the reason why both of these players were not picked for the South Africa series.

MSK Prasad stated that the idea is to build a new crop of Indian spinners. Rahul Chahar, Washington Sundar, and Krunal Pandya had delivered the goods on the West Indies tour. Thus, it made sense to throw them one more opportunity.

The young guns have done well.

Rahul Chahar had made his debut in the West Indies series and he has done well in the Indian Premier League for Mumbai Indians. Washington Sundar had also impressed as he has the skills to keep the runs down. Furthermore, Krunal Pollard has ticked the right boxes with both bat as well as the ball.

MSK Prasad said, “We are just trying to build a pool of spinners. The likes of Rahul Chahar, Krunal Pandya and Washington Sundar had done well in the last series and they deserve another go.”

On the other hand, Yuzvendra Chahal did a fine job for India A as he scalped five wickets and conceded only 47 runs in the first unofficial ODI match against South Africa A at Thiruvanthapuram. Thus, India A won the first match by 69 runs.

“Yes he was unavailable for selection,” he said.

India is currently playing the second Test match against West Indies at Jamaica. The T20I series against South Africa will begin from 15th September at Dharamshala.
