India is in danger to lose the hosting rights of ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 due to the strict law of the hosting model of the International Cricket Council (ICC).

The ICC has recently sent a letter to the full members where they have threatened the members to remove from the hosting rights if they fail to maintain ICC’s new model.

As per the recent report of the TOI, the global governing body is demanding the government guarantees from future hosting nations of ICC events.

In this case, the ICC has one of the major issues with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in the tax exemptions. To organise the global events, the ICC generally gets the tax exemption from the member countries, but that wasn’t possible during the ICC World T20 2016 which was organised by India. Though the BCCI tried their best, the government had denied providing the tax exemptions for that tournament.

India is one of the strongest full members of the ICC. The country will host the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 and ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. But if the Indian government doesn’t think about the tax exemptions for the future ICC tournaments, it can hugely affect India’s plan to host the future ICC tournaments.

While the ICC has tightened its views on tax exemptions for future global events, the BCCI has also not agreed to take the burden of tax liabilities for hosting future events. So, it can ultimately cost the nation by losing the hosting rights of the future ICC tournaments.

A BCCI official told TOI, “What’s happening is utter madness. And India still doesn’t seem to be in a position to do much about it, because it has to first wait for the Supreme Court’s order. [Shashank] Manohar [the ICC chairman] has already said that India will lose the 2023 World Cup if it doesn’t get tax exemptions. This is worrying because we all know what happens if things go that way.”

India can miss out more hosting rights of future ICC tournaments

The ICC Is planning to organise many tournaments during the eight-year cycle between 2023 and 2031. If the government and BCCI can’t take the positive decisions on this soon, the country may miss out more opportunities to host the ICC tournaments during this next eight-year cycle.

India haven’t received the hosting fees for the ICC T20 World Cup 2020 yet. From the next eight-year cycle, starting from 2023, the ICC will also not provide the hosting fees of any global tournament. It means that the hosting nation will have to generate their revenue from ticket sales, hospitality and catering.
