India Vs South Africa 2020: India’s Predicted 15-Member ODI Squad

The hosts New Zealand thrashed the visitors India in the recently concluded three-match ODI series as they won that series by the 3-0 margin. After the conclusion of the New Zealand tour, India will end their present home international season with the ODI series against South Africa.

South Africa, who played the T20I and Test series in India in last September-October, will return to India for the three-match ODI series. They will play the three ODIs of the forthcoming series on 12th March (Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, Dharamsala), 15th March (Ekana International Cricket Stadium, Lucknow) and 18th March (Eden Gardens, Kolkata).

Before the squad announcement, here is the 15-member probable Indian squad for the home ODI series against South Africa.

(Openers)

Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan are likely to miss the upcoming home ODI series against South Africa. So, team management can go with newcomers in the opening batting.

The 20-year-old opening batsman Prithvi Shaw made his ODI debut in the last ODI series in New Zealand. In that three-match series, he impressed with his batting as he scored 84 runs (average 28.00). In that series, the youngster scored 20, 24 and 40 runs respectively in a speedy way.

Mayank Agarwal

Like Prithvi Shaw, Mayank Agarwal made his ODI debut in the same ODI series in New Zealand. However, he didn’t much impress the team management as he scored 36 runs in three games (average 12.00). The right-handed opening batsman scored 32, 3 and one run respectively in that series.

The 20-year-old Shubman Gill is one of the in-form cricketers in Indian domestic cricket and India A. In last year, he made ODI debut during India tour of New Zealand and played two ODIs where he scored a total of 16 runs. He is a strong performer as an opener or top-order batsman.

(Other batsmen)

As the openers are newcomers, this position is very important in the Indian batting line-up in the present ODIs.

Virat Kohli (C)

Indian captain Virat Kohli is holding the no.1 position in ICC ODI batting rankings for a long time. However, in recent times, Kohli is struggling to perform consistently and to reach the three-figure marks. His form is very crucial, especially when Rohit Sharma is not in the ODI side.

Shreyas Iyer

In a very short time, Shreyas Iyer has won the faith of the team. While the team management was struggling for a long time to settle up the proper batsman for the no.4 position in the ODI cricket, Iyer fits him into this crucial spot. In the last ODI series in New Zealand, Iyer finished as the leading run-scorer (217 runs) after registering 50+ scores in all those three innings, including his maiden ODI century.

Manish Pandey

India, predicted ODI Squad, India vs South Africa

As a middle-order batsman, Manish Pandey has got very limited opportunities in recent times, but he has utilised these opportunities properly in most of the times. While he is changing his game according to the situations, he is mostly not throwing up his wicket.

Kedar Jadhav

India, predicted ODI Squad, India vs South Africa

At present, Kedar Jadhav is mostly playing as a middle-order batsman rather than as an all-rounder. So, he is getting limited opportunities in recent times. Though his performances are mostly enough according to the situations, he is getting tough competition from Manish Pandey.

(Wicketkeepers)

KL Rahul

India, predicted ODI Squad, India vs South Africa

In the present limited-overs matches, KL Rahul is playing as a wicketkeeper-batsman. Though many experts are against this decision, Rahul is handling this new role in an excellent way. He is now performing consistently with the bat and that too in various positions.

Rishabh Pant

The young wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant is struggling to find a place in the playing XI. In the absence of MS Dhoni since the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, Pant got many opportunities in the limited-overs cricket but failed to impress. Now, the rise of wicketkeeper-batsman KL Rahul has made tougher for Pant to return to the playing XI in limited-overs formats.

(All-rounder)

Ravindra Jadeja

The experienced all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja is playing a crucial role in this team. His presence always provides the deepness in every aspect – batting, bowling and of course fielding. If the team management chooses to test some youngsters, Jadeja’s presence becomes more important in the side. In present days, the 31-year-old is mostly playing brave and supporting cricket when his team needs him most.

(Spinners)

Both the wrist-spinners are fighting for the spots in the playing XI. They need to perform consistently to assure their places.

Yuzvendra Chahal

While India lost the ODI series in recent New Zealand tour, the leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal finished as the joint-most wicket-taker in that series after picking up six wickets in two games. Though he is performing better, he needs to perform consistently to fix his spot in the ODI side.

Kuldeep Yadav

The left-arm chinaman Kuldeep Yadav hugely struggled last year. The youngster is working hard to return to his natural rhythm. While he needs more regular opportunities, he also has to perform consistently to maintain his place in the team.

(Pacers)

The team management can rest the experienced and primary pacers due to workload management. Also, some Indian pacers are currently unavailable due to fitness issues.

Shardul Thakur

The right-arm pacer Shardul Thakur was the most wicket-taker (eight wickets) at the end of the five-match T20I series in recent New Zealand tour. But he disappointed in the subsequent ODI series where he took four wickets in three matches but he was also very expensive. However, team management can give him some more chances and his aggressive batting is one of the big plus points for the team.

Navdeep Saini

The 27-year-old right-arm fast bowler Navdeep Saini has impressed in his initial outings in international cricket. However, in the recent New Zealand tour, he mostly failed to take wickets. With his growing experiences, he has to make improvements in his skills to perform consistently.

Jaydev Unadkat

The 28-year-old left-arm pacer Jaydev Unadkat is one of the most in-form pacers in the present Indian domestic cricket. In the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2019/20, Saurashtra captain Unadkat is currently the third most wicket-taker with 51 wickets. In the last three first-class innings, he claimed three six-wicket hauls.

Having the seven ODIs experiences, Unadkat played last ODI in November 2013, but he played the last T20I in March 2018. Though another young left-arm pacer Khaleel Ahmed is currently a strong competitor of him to grab a place in the Indian squad, Unadkat can earn a new opportunity due to his experience, especially if the experienced pacers miss this series.

In the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2019/20, Unadkat was the leading wicket-taker for his team Saurashtra as the left-arm pacer bagged 15 wickets in eight games.
