India Is A Stronger Side In Test Format At Home, Says Nathan Lyon

Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon believes India’s tour won’t be easy for the visitors as the four-match Border-Gavaskar Test series which is scheduled in February will test them mentally and physically before stating that they have to acclimatise to conditions in India.

“Touring there tests you physically and mentally. It puts every area of your skill and resilience under the microscope. To stand up and play well in India is to announce yourself as a world class team and that is what we want to do,” Lyon stated in a column which he wrote for The Sydney Morning Herald.

The 29-year-old spinner believes that his side will be giving their best on the field to prove Australia as a world class side.

“Recent history tells us that over the past 10 years India has lost just four of 49 Tests at home – two to South Africa and two to England,” Lyon added.

Following the recent success against Pakistan in 3-match Test series, Lyon has expressed that his side will give hundred percent to play the crucial part at an individual level for the team.

“We may have to play ugly to score runs and take wickets. Captain Steve Smith talked about adapting to the conditions,” Lyon remarked.

However, Australia would be focusing on their upcoming tour which has been stated as the gruelling encounter.

“The most important thing I found when I toured there four years ago was adjusting to the type of wickets we’ll be playing on,” he said.

Steven Smith-led side is currently taking on Pakistan in the 5-match One-day international series. They are 1-0 up with four to go.

“They’re going to be spin-friendly but India’s batsmen are probably the best players of spin in the world, so we’re going to have to be patient,” Lyon remarked.

In the recently concluded 5-match Test series, India thrashed England 4-0 after beating New Zealand 3-0.

In 2013, when Australia toured India, the visitors were hammered 4-0 by hosts.

“In India, Test matches tend to start slowly but they can speed up very quickly. It’s about hanging in there and trying to win the big moments throughout the day,” Lyon concluded.

In 63 Tests for Australia, Lyon has bagged 228 wickets which include seven five-wicket hauls and one ten-wicket haul.

Lyon said the new-look Australian side will be facing hardships as they will be greeted by the spin-friendly conditions, but their young rookies are capable of performing under pressure.

The Test series will kickstart from February 23 in Pune.
