Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan have been India’s first choice openers for half a decade now. Coming to open the innings during the Champions Trophy 2013, the pair set the benchmark, and never looked back. Meanwhile, during the second ODI at the Bay Oval against New Zealand; Rohit-Dhawan surpassed the legendary duo of Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag for most century stands for India in ODIs. Their 154-run partnership is the 14th occasion when the pair has stitched together 100 or more runs in ODIs. However, Sachin-Sehwag achieved the feat 13 times together.
India dominates the first session in the 2nd ODI
The India National Cricket Team batted first after Virat Kohli won the toss. Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan laid a perfect platform for a massive total on the board. Defying the early movement off the pitch, the pair played their shots and found gaps at will. Though each of them didn’t reach the three-digit mark, both Rohit and Dhawan completed their respective fifties. On the one hand, Rohit scored 87 runs; Shikhar, on the other, made 66 off 67.
In the meanwhile, they had gone past the pair of Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag for most century stands in One-Day cricket. However, the carnage didn’t end there, as the batsmen to follow hit some runs too. As the India captain, Virat scored 43 runs, Ambati Rayudu hit 47 off 49. Later, a 53-run partnership between MS Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav saw India scoring 324 for four in 50 overs.
