On Sunday (6th October), during the fifth day of the Visakhapatnam Test between India and South Africa, the hosts India claimed a big victory by 203 runs.

South Africa began the day five on their overnight fourth innings total of 11/1, while they had to chase 395 runs to win that game. In the second session of the day, South Africa were bundled out for 191 runs.

With this victory, India have taken the 1-0 lead in this three-match Test series with two to go.

  • It was the highest fourth-innings total for South Africa in India. Their previous record was 185 runs at Nagpur in November 2015.

  • It is the highest aggregated Test total for South Africa against India in a losing cause. The previous record was 586 runs during Kolkata Test in February 2010.

  • It is the highest number of sixes in a Test match history. The previous record was 35 sixes during the match between Pakistan and New Zealand at Sharjah in November 2014.

i) Playing his 66th Test, Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin completed his 350 Test wickets.

  • Ravichandran Ashwin becomes the joint-fastest bowler to claim 350 Test wickets. Before this Test match, the former Sri Lankan off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan was lonely holding this record as he also reached this milestone in 66 Tests.

i) Indian left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja completed his 150 Test wickets at home.

  • Ravindra Jadeja became the first Indian left-arm bowler to complete 150 Test wickets at home.

i) South African no.10 batsman Dane Piedt scored 56 runs.

  • It is the fourth-highest individual score by a no.10 or lower-positioned batsman in the fourth innings of a Test match. The top three scores in this list are 77* by Tim Southee (New Zealand against England at Napier in March 2008), 68* by Mitchell Starc (Australia against South Africa at Perth in November 2012) and 63 by Ish Sodhi (New Zealand against Pakistan at Abu Dhabi in November 2014)

 

Senuran Muthusamy and Dane Piedt (South Africa)

i) In the fourth innings of this Test match, South African tailenders Senuran Muthusamy and Dane Piedt put the 91 runs partnership for the ninth wicket.

  • It is South Africa’s highest ninth-wicket partnership in the fourth-innings of a Test match. Their previous record was 86 runs partnership between Mark Boucher and Fanie de Villiers against Pakistan at Durban in February-March 1998. 
  • It is the highest ninth-wicket Test partnership for South Africa against India. The previous record was 60 runs partnership between Allan Donald and Fanie de Villiers at Ahmedabad in November 1996.

i) In the fourth innings of this match, the Indian pacer Mohammed Shami had the bowling figures of 10.5-2-35-5.

  • It is the fourth-best bowling figures by an Indian pacer in the fourth innings of a home Test.
