IPL 2017: Hit List – Top 15 Who Hit The Bulls-Eye

As Mumbai Indians defeated Rising Pune Supergiant in a nail-biting encounter in the ‘Grand Finale’ on May 21, IPL season 10 came to end.

This tenth edition of the IPL had seen a plethora of performances starting from some uncapped players to international stars rising to the occasion. Some have come up with their sparks lately while some performed throughout.

Sunrisers Hyderabad skipper David Warner and Kolkata Knight Riders’ captain Gautam Gambhir were the biggest performers with the bat.

While pacers Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, Jaydev Unadkat and Afghan spinner Rashid Khan were impressive with their bowling efforts.

Just like the previous nine editions, the 10th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) brought out a number of hits and misses. While many star players failed to deliver with both bat and ball, youngsters and rookies took the centre-stage with their impressive performances.

Let’s have a look who all joins the hit parade:

  1. DAVID WARNER: The Australian batsman led from the front for Sunrisers Hyderabad, as he topped the run-scorers list with 641 runs from 14 games. Though Hyderabad lost in the eliminator, failing to defend their title, Warner excelled again, showing a great sense of responsibility. His highest score was 126 off 80 deliveries against Kolkata Knight Riders.

  1. GAUTAM GAMBHIR: Like Warner, Gambhir captained Kolkata Knight Riders to the verge of the final before they lost the second qualifier to eventual winners Mumbai Indians. He once again showed his undying hunger for runs as he milked 498 runs. One stand-out decision of his captaincy was asking West Indian spinner, Sunil Narine, to open the innings as the latter came out with flying colours. He scored huge number seven in this season.

  1. SHIKHAR DHAWAN: With 479 runs, Dhawan finished as the third highest run-scorer turning out for Hyderabad, who relied on him and Warner at the top of the batting order as the team from South had a thin lower-middle order. Dhawan made his critics mouth sealed up with his skills this season.

  1. BEN STOKES: The Englishman came with an auction fee of Rs 14.5 crore and did his best to live up to the hype. Arguably the tournament’s best all-rounder, Stokes was the driving force behind Pune’s run till the final. He made it a memorable IPL with 316 runs from 12 games and 12 wickets with an impressive economy rate of 7.18. He left for the national duty towards the end and Pune did really miss him, especially in the final.

  1. RAHUL TRIPATHI: The 26-year-old Tripathi took IPL 2017 by storm and has been one of the finds of the season. The RPS batsman has scored 388 runs in 13 matches at an average of 29.84 in the tournament. Tripathi’s match-winning knock of 93 against KKR was the high point for the Maharashtra batsman in the tournament. He also scored 38 vs KKR, 45 (Mumbai Indians) and 59 (SRH) in winning causes for Steve Smith and Co. With two half-centuries and strike-rate of 149.80, Tripathi has managed to cement his place in top 10 highest run-getters
  1. NITISH RANA: An attacking left-handed batsman from Delhi, Rana has been another find of the season. The southpaw didn’t take much time to settle alongside other star players in IPL 2017. The opener played 13 matches for Mumbai Indians (MI) this season, scoring 333 runs at an average of 30.27. The southpaw has three half-centuries to his name. The Delhi lad hogged the limelight when he scored an unbeaten 62 off 34 balls and stitched a solid 85-run stand with Jos Buttler (77) to guide MI to a resounding eight-wicket win. He was also adjudged man-of-the-match for his 53 runs in MI’s six-wicket win over Gujarat Lions (GL).

  1. SUNIL NARINE: The West Indies spinner is known to bamboozle batsmen with his witty tweaks. But, the IPL 2017 saw the mystery spinner in a different avatar. KKR captain Gautam Gambhir surprised everyone by bringing in Narine as an opener alongside him and the 28-year-old didn’t disappoint. Narine recorded the joint-fastest IPL fifty (off 15 balls) in the tournament. He sent the RCB bowlers for a leather hunt with freakish hits. He also claimed 10 wickets in the tournament.
  1. WASHINGTON SUNDAR: The Tamil Nadu off-spinner was not the most well-known player when IPL 10 began. But by the end of it, he was among the names making waves for Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS). He didn’t get the most wickets, by any stretch of the imagination, but his contribution as a restrictive bowler grew as the tournament progressed.Once he got three wickets off Mumbai Indians in the Qualifier 1, he had arrived. The 17-year-old could have a bright future provided he is nurtured properly.

  1. BHUVNESWAR KUMAR: Dominating the wicket-takers’ chart, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar has had an impressive run in the IPL 2017. With 26 wickets in 14 matches in the tournament, Bhuvneshwar has played a vital role to pave Sunrisers Hyderabad’s road to the playoffs. Though the defending champions were ousted from IPL 2017 after losing against two-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the rain-marred Eliminator clash, Bhuvneshwar’s domination with the ball cannot be overlooked. The Meerut pacer claimed the best figures of 5 for 19 against Kings XI Punjab.

  1. RASHID KHAN: The 18-year-old Afghan leg-spinner turned out to be a success story of the tournament. He justified his auction fee of Rs 4 crore as he impressed one and all with his guile and control of a very difficult art in cricket. His googly was very deceptive and overall he took 17 wickets from 14 games. His economy rate of 6.62 is the best among the bowlers who have bowled more than 40 overs.

  1. JASPRIT BUMRAH: The right-arm paceman proved that he is India’s best death-over specialist as he scalped 20 wickets from 16 games with an economy of 7.35. Like Bhuvneshwar and Unadkat, he was asked to choke runs at the start and end of the innings.

  1. JAYDEV UNDAKAT: One of the key players who helped unfancied Pune in reaching the final, Unadkat picked 24 wickets from 12 matches. His left-arm bowling ensured that the batsmen find it tough to negotiate. He delivered both with the new and the old ball. His stand-out performance was 5/30 against as they defended a total of 148/8 against Hyderabad. He also has a hattrick attached to his name.

  1. RISHABH PANT:  The wicketkeeper-batsman from Delhi is being talked about as a potential replacement for M.S Dhoni in India’s limited-overs squads. Pant is not a newbie in the IPL though – he was a regular member of the squad last season too. With 366 runs in 14 games at a strike rate of 165 runs per 100 balls, he finished the second highest run-scorer for the franchise this season. He is one of the hardest hitters of the ball, and by the end of the Delhi’s season, he had hit 24 sixes. His most destructive knock was the 97 against Gujarat Lions.A century was his for the taking but a rash shot ended his innings, one that won the respect of opposing captain Suresh Raina. Pant also showed remarkable composure and strength of mind by committing to his team just days after he lost his father.

  1. BASIL THAMPI: The fast bowler from Kerala impressed with his pace. Thampi was bought by the franchise for Rs 10 lakh and it proved a good bargain as he finished with 11 wickets in 12 games. His best figures were 3 for 29 against eventual champions Mumbai Indians in a tied match. He has impressed in the death overs and overall, he performed well enough to impress the IPL jury to take home the Emerging Player Award for the season.

Other notable players were Shardul Thakur,  Krunal Pandya, Hardik Pandya, Robin Uthappa, Siddharth Kaul, to mention few.
