IPL 2017: Swot Analysis Of Rising Pune Supergiant

Rising Pune Supergiants, the name is befitting to the giants present in the team. Likes of MS Dhoni, Steve Smith, AJinkya Rahane, Faf du Plessis are not just giants for this team but also the giants of the game at international level.

All of above names have excelled on the international level and in almost every format.

This team was supposed to be one of the strongest team in the last edition of IPL due to presence stars, but they failed to play as one unit and as a result the team could just win five out of 14 games with one of the wins coming when Dhoni chased down 23 runs in last over against kings XI Punjab, which happens once in a blue moon night.

The team will be hoping for a turnaround in fortune this season. So let us to analyse the strength, weakness, opportunities and threats:

Strengths –

The Presence Of Impactful Players – The biggest strength that this team possess is the number of impactful players that they have on their roster. Likes of MS Dhoni, Steve Smith, Faf du PLesis, Ajinkya Rahane and R Ashwin to name a few. The name of these players is enough to weigh this team as the heaviest of all as these have oodles of experience, which is enough to put any opposition under pressure.

Strong Batting Line-Up – The Pune-based franchise has strongest batting line-up, compared to any other team as they have someone like Rahane, Smith and du Plessis, who can bat at the top and down the middle as well. These three are stars of the team who knows when to put their foot on an accelerator in the shortest format of the game. Plus, the presence of MS Dhoni down the order is enough for this team to not care about the death over as Dhoni’s blitz and his ability to churn out as much runs he want versus any bowling line-up adds to the brawn of this team. So batting looks really set at the moment.

Solid Spin – With Ravichandran Ashwin -The home bully; Adam Zampa – the highest wicket-taker in ODIs last year, and Imran Tahir – the number 1 T20I bowler; what more can a team ask for in their spin department? The presence of these three spinners is enough for the captain not to look for any other options as they combine to give captain variety. So these three spinners can be used as an attacking force.

Any team who is sure of services of these three spinners already have half of the game in their bag, especially when they will be playing seven of their games at their home ground in Pune.

Dominant All-Rounders – This team spent a total of 14.50 Crores to acquire the services of all-rounder Ben Stoke and now it’s time to reap benefits out of amount they spent. Ben Stokes will be the main weapon which they will look to cash in on and along with him, Rajat Bhatia and Dan Christian provides them with an extra all-round option. The success of this team heavily depends on Stokes particularly.

Weakness –

The Problem Of Choice –  The Steven Smith-led side has a number of options in every department and it will be an onerous task for the skipper to pick suitable options and get the right combination. This problem of choice can also turn into a weakness.

New Skipper – Though the franchise has announced Steven Smith as the leader of the side well in advance but one cannot take out a captain from MS Dhoni. There might be a case in a game when we might see a Deja Vu of some moments of ODI series between India and England where we saw a fielder getting instructions from both Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni. If this happens here as well, then we might see a clash of ego between the two skippers.

Foreign Players Leaving The Tournament Early – Their key players like Faf du Plessis and Ben Stokes will leave from the tournament early which will be a big blow for the team. Their absence will hurt them if they reach the next round of the league. This will really put this team in a deep trouble, and is a handicap for this team.

Poor Track Record – The team made a decent start in the league last year with a win over the defending champions, Mumbai Indians in the first game of the tournament but then came the moment when they faced a slump in form and could win only four out of 13 games they played.

The biggest disappointment was that MS Dhoni-led Pune lost both of the games against Gujarat Lions, as they lost to a team captained by Raina who has always played under Dhoni and it was surprising to see Raina overpowering Dhoni on both the occasions.

So, the past record of this team can have an effect on their psyche.

Opportunities –

IPL 2017, Rising Pune Supergiants

The biggest opportunity for this team is to use MS Dhoni as a player and reap the maximum out of him. This time, Dhoni will not have the burden of the captaincy and it’s an opportunity for the team to experiment with Dhoni, make him bat up the order and see what changes he can bring to the team?

Threats –

Apart from their poor track record, one of the weakness or biggest threat for this team is foreign players leaving the tournament early. If in case, this team qualify for the play-offs, then the absence of foreign players will hurt them as all the players are impactful players, who have the propensity to write a winning script.

Surely, the team will need a backup plan for the foreign players if they qualify for the play-offs of the tournament.
