IPL 2018: Kolkata Knight Riders vs Royal Challengers Bangalore – Statistical Highlights

Kolkata Knight Riders started their season with a comprehensive four-wicket win over Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Sent in to bat first, the Royal Challengers rode on contributions from Brendon McCullum, AB de Villiers and Mandeep Singh to post 176 for seven.

McCullum gave his team a fine start by scoring 43 off 27 with the help of six fours and two sixes. De Villiers then hit five sixes en route to his 44-run knock. Towards the end, Mandeep scored 37 off 17 to guide his team to a good total.

In reply, Kolkata chased down the total quite comfortably. Sunil Narine gave them a flying start by slamming a 17-ball fifty. Nitish Rana and Dinesh Karthik then all but sealed the game with a 50-plus stand. The Knight Riders eventually reached the target with seven balls remaining.

With the game done and dusted now, here is a look at some interesting numbers:

1. The 17-ball fifty made Sunil Narine the first player to score multiple fifties in 17 and fewer balls in the IPL. He scored a 15-ball fifty also against Bangalore last year.

2. Narine is only the fourth player after Chris Gayle (3), Kieron Pollard (2) and Imran Nazir (2) to score multiple fifties in 17 and fewer balls in the Twenty20 format.

3. Nitish Rana became only the third player to dismiss Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers on consecutive deliveries in an over. Jacques Kallis and Thisara Perera had done it in the past.

4. Mitchell Johnson bowled 25.5 consecutive overs without taking a wicket in the Twenty20 format. Johnson failed to take a wicket in each of his last five games in the recent BBL season. He picked up Sarfaraz Khan’s wicket in his final over of the game.

5. Sundar conceded more than 40 runs in a T20 for the first time. He conceded 48 runs against the Knight Riders.

6. The game was Virat Kohli and Robin Uthappa’s 150th appearance in IPL. Kohli also became the first player to feature in 150 IPL games for a single team.

7. AB de Villiers has now hit 162 sixes in IPL. He is fourth on the list of most number of sixes for any player and the 2nd most for an overseas player in the IPL. Chris Gayle (265), Rohit Sharma (173) and Suresh Raina (173) are ahead of the Proteas star.

8. Brendon McCullum has now scored 9035 runs in T20s. He became the second player after Chris Gayle to complete 9000 runs.
