Ever since Ravichandran Ashwin ‘Mankaded’ Jos Buttler, the 12th edition of IPL has thrown a new form of dismissal which has become a viable option for bowlers to dismiss opposition batsmen. This was not the first time that Mankad happened but in IPL cricket, it certainly was. Ravichandran Ashwin came under severe criticism from former greats and cricket experts.
Many said that Ashwin was well within the spirit of the game as had just made use of a law which is existing in the game. However, there were several former cricketers who felt that it wasn’t expected from a player of Ashwin’s stature. Recently, Mumbai Indians all-rounder Krunal Pandya gave a Mankad warning to Mayank Agarwal of Kings XI Punjab but didn’t run him out.
He tried to do the same thing with Chennai Super Kings skipper MS Dhoni in yesterday’s game between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings. The incident occurred in the 14th over of the 2nd innings as Chennai Super Kings was chasing a target of 171 runs. It was Krunal Pandya who bailed out of his run-up at the bowling crease in order to give a Mankad warning to MS Dhoni at the other end.

However, as we know MS Dhoni does most of the things in a correct and replays showed that the CSK skipper was well within the tramline and he had never dragged his bat out of the crease. Coming back to the game, it was a great all-around effort from Hardik Pandya which laid the foundation for Mumbai Indians’ 2nd victory of the tournament.
After batting first, Mumbai lost 3 wickets early but it was Suryakumar Yadav and Krunal Pandya who resurrected the innings with good knocks. However, the late impetus in the innings was provided by Hardik Pandya and Kieron Pollard. They shared a 49 runs stand in 16 deliveries which propelled Mumbai Indians to a score of 170 runs. Hardik remained unbeaten on 25 of just 8 deliveries.
In their bid to chase the target down, Chennai Super Kings lost their first 3 wickets pretty early. MS Dhoni’s wicket proved to be the game-changing moment. After his dismissal, there was no way back for Chennai as they succumbed to their first defeat of the tournament so far.
