Kolkata hosted the IPL 2020 auction last Thursday (19th December). All the eight teams participated in that auction to fill up their squad for the new season (IPL 2020).
More than 950 players registered their names for that auction. However, in the final moment before the auction, 338 players were shortlisted for the bidding process. But, in the auction process, all the shortlisted names were not taken.
Before that auction, a total of 73 slots were available which had to be filed by the franchises with their remaining purse. Out of those 73 slots, a maximum of 29 overseas players could be sold from that auction.
The auction process ran similarly like every previous year. To buy a player, the franchise had to start the bid from the player’s respective predetermined base price (base price range between 20 lakh to 2 crores). Every franchise could participate in every bidding process. At the end of the process, the final bidder would secure that player.
A total of 62 players were sold in that auction, including 29 overseas cricketers. The franchises spent a whopping total amount of INR 140 crore.
Australian pacer Pat Cummins was most expensive in that auction as Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) bought him for INR 15.50 crore. It created a new record of most expensive overseas buy in IPL history. However, overall IPL auction history, it was the second most expensive buy.
Another Australia cricketer Glenn Maxwell earned the second-most expensive figure in that auction. Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) bought him for INR 10.75 crore. South African bowling all-rounder Chris Morris was the only other player who earned the INR 10 crore bid in that auction as Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) won that.
