As the government is focusing on moving from the lockdown process, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is now thinking how to return to the game safely. Conducting IPL 2020 is a major goal for the BCCI in the present moment, and the board is looking at every option, including organising it outside India.
The Indian Premier League (IPL) is one of the biggest yearly projects for the BCCI as they now yearly generate around INR 4000 crore revenue from it. The tournament has the specific window in every year as the IPL 2020 was also scheduled between 29th March and 24th May 2020. However, the coronavirus pandemic has forced to postpone this tournament for an indefinite period.
The BCCI is still hopeful for the IPL 2020 as it will majorly help them financially in this crisis. As the country is moving out from the stiff lockdown period, just like the other countries, the BCCI is looking at all the options in the present moment.
A source within the BCCI has recently clarified to the ANI that the board is also thinking to shift the IPL 2020 outside India, but it can only happen as the last option.
The source told ANI, “The board is looking at all options. If it comes to taking IPL out of India, it may happen but as the last option. If that’s the only option then we will consider it. We have done it in the past also and we can do it again but the first preference will be to host it in India.”
Sri Lanka and UAE have wished to organise the IPL 2020
The Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has already wished to host the IPL 2020. Later, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) also showed their interest to organise this tournament.
Earlier, South Africa hosted the entire second edition of the IPL in 2009. The UAE organised the first half of the IPL 2014, while India hosted the last half of that tournament. Both those tournaments were shifted outside India due to the general elections.
As the initial dates of the IPL 2020 have gone past now, the BCCI is searching for the new window to organise the IPL 2020 safely.
Meanwhile, the International Cricket Council (ICC) and Cricket Australia (CA) are doubtful about the fate of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2020, which Australia will host from 18th October to 15th November 2020. If this tournament gets cancelled, the BCCI can utilise this window for the IPL 2020.
The source added, “We will wait for clarity over T20 World Cup from ICC before discussing anything further. But I can tell that as of now no decision has been taken.”
The ICC is likely to take the decision on the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2020 on 10th June.
