ToggleIn the fifth match of the IPL 2020, the defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI) registered their first victory in this season after beating Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by 49 runs at Abu Dhabi.
After winning the toss, Kolkata Knight Riders captain Dinesh Karthik decided to field first. In the first innings of the game, Mumbai Indians set up the total of 195/5 (20 overs). In reply, Kolkata Knight Riders scored 146/9 (20 overs).
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) innings:
Chasing down the challenging target, KKR openers lost their wickets in single digit as Shubman Gill scored 7 runs while Sunil Narine lost his wicket on 9 runs. Captain Dinesh Karthik and Nitish Rana handled that early situation and tried to control that innings. However, both of them lost their wickets at the crucial time after getting well settled down. While Karthik scored 30 runs, Rana was dismissed for 24 runs.
While the require-rate was continuously moving towards the tougher level, Andre Russell lost his wicket on 11 runs in the 16th over. In that same over, Eoin Morgan was dismissed on 16 runs. In the next over, Nikhil Naik lost his wicket for just one run.
In the last moment, Pat Cummins tried hard with his little fiery knock, including hitting four sixes to Jasprit Bumrah in an over, it was too late for KKR. James Pattinson dismissed Cummins, who scored 33 runs off just 12 balls (only four and 4 sixes).
Among the Mumbai Indians bowlers, Trent Boult (2/30), James Pattinson (2/25), Jasprit Bumrah (2/32) and Rahul Chahar (2/26) got two wickets each.

Mumbai Indians (MI) innings:
In his first over in the IPL 2020, the 21-year-old Shivam Mavi dismissed the opener Quinton de Kock (1). However, skipper and another opener Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav not only handled that early situation but set up a good base for the defending champions in that innings.
Rohit and Suryakumar had the 90 runs partnership for the second wicket. While Suryakumar was run out on 47 runs off 28 balls (6 fours and only six), Rohit soon completed his half-century in 39 balls. After that partnership was broken, captain Rohit controlled that innings while the middle-order batsmen played some cameos in that innings.
Saurabh Tiwary scored 21 runs before Sunil Narine dismissed him. Rohit scored 80 runs off 54 balls (3 fours and 6 sixes) before Mavi registered his second wicket in this game by dismissing the Mumbai Indians captain.
In the 19th over, Hardik Pandya (18 runs) lost his wicket through the hit wicket. Kireon Pollard remained not out on 13 runs off 7 balls.
Shivam Mavi had the bowling figures of 4-1-32-2. Also, Sunil Narine (1/22) and Andre Russell (1/17) bagged one wicket each. Australian pacer Pat Cummins, the most expensive player in the 2020 IPL auction, finished that innings with the most expensive bowling figures of 3-0-49-0.

Great start by @mipaltan fast bowlers and well supported by Rahul & Pollard.
At no stage did it appear that any partnership threatened to chase the target.#KKRvMI #IPL2020 pic.twitter.com/9yvEJnvp2H— Sachin Tendulkar (@sachin_rt) September 23, 2020
I feel fast bowlers will get more help off the surface in the 2nd innings. Apart from Mavi, who has bowled better lengths, @KKRiders have bowled too short so far.
Rohit & Surya have displayed fantastic strokeplay and are batting with controlled aggression.#KKRvMI #IPL2020

Suryakumar Yadav deserves a special mention—consistently scoring for #MI and that too at a fair clip now. Well done, brother. Keep knocking at the Indian team’s door….till you break it down. ?? #MIvKKR

It was supposed to be a contest between KKR's middle-order muscle vs MI's bowling power. In T20, it is always bowling muscle which always wins more matches. Tonight it was proved again. #MIvsKKR #IPLinUAE #IPL2020

Can't keep a top player down for long. Bumrah has been outstanding. Big part of an excellent bowling effort by @mipaltan today

Whoa! KKR can’t win but Cummins messes up Bumrah’s bowling figures with a flurry of 6s. Made some amends for his profligate bowling

If you had to pick the KKR batsman who would hit an on song Bumrah for 4 sixes in an over, this scenario wouldn’t be in your first 5 guesses. Well played Cummins, handy help to the NRR ?
