In a major takeaway from Sunday’s meeting of the IPL Governing Council, women’s IPL has got the green light. The development came on the day when the IPL GC finalised the dates for this year’s IPL. The thirteenth edition of the men’s IPL will start from September 19 and end on November 10. The entire tournament will be held in the UAE due to the alarming coronavirus situation in India.
IPL GC confirmed the women’s IPL and stated that three teams will play four matches in the UAE. All the games will be played during the men’s IPL playoff week.
“Women’s T20 Challenge will also take place in the UAE and will comprise three teams with four matches to be played during the IPL Playoff week,” the statement from the IPL GC read. “A meeting with the franchises will be called shortly.”
Women’s T20 challenge started in 2018 when there was a one-off women’s T20 exhibition match at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai which did not attract too many spectators. Less than 200 spectators were watching the game which was held in noon before the first qualifier. But despite the low turnout, BCCI turned the Women’s T20 Challenge into a three-team event in Jaipur in 2019. And it received good reactions from the fans. The games were held on the playoff days.
Timing of IPL games:
The IPL GC also confirmed the match timings for the tournament and the fans will be delighted with it. Despite being played in the UAE, all evening matches will start at 7:30 pm IST and the afternoon matches, 10 of them, will start at 3:30 pm IST. The 53-day tournament will also see player replacements allowed for the first time in its history.
“VIVO IPL 2020 will be played from 19th September and the final will be played on 10th November 2020. The 53-day tournament will witness 10-afternoon matches starting at 15:30 IST while the evening matches will start at 19:30 IST,” the BCCI said in a statement.
“The Governing Council also discussed the comprehensive Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), which will be finalised and published in due course, including the agencies to execute and deliver a bio-secure environment for safe and successful conduct of IPL 2020 Season,” added the statement.
