IPL Franchises Want To Play Off-Season Matches In Non-Cricketing Countries

The full schedule of IPL 2020 has been announced recently. While the franchises are looking to start their preparation for the IPL 2020, they also have a suggestion to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to play off-season matches outside India.

Indian Premier League (IPL) started in 2008. From the beginning of this tournament, it has gained popularity not only India but in world cricket too. Both followers are growing up heavily with time progress.

Since the Champions League T20 has been defunct, the IPL teams only play the Indian cash-rich tournament in every year. While the franchises are interested in playing more cricket during the non-IPL period, they also want to play these matches abroad.

IPL franchises are interested to play in the US, Canada, Indonesia etc.

According to the recent TOI reports, Mumbai Indians (MI), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Rajasthan Royals (RR) have shown interest to play off-season matches outside India, especially lesser-popular cricket countries, like the US, Canada, Indonesia etc. They believe that it will help to grow up the popularities of IPL in these non-cricketing countries.

These franchises feel that it can be the win-win situation for the BCCI and them as the Indian board will get 20% of the earnings of the franchises.

However, the BCCI hasn’t given any importance on these suggestions yet.

The TOI reports claimed, “Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Rajasthan Royals — they’ve all shown interest in playing abroad during the off-season (when IPL is not on). The BCCI refuses to even take it up officially, despite the GC discussing it in the recent past,”

“It will only help the IPL grow outside of India, especially in the USA, Canada, Singapore and other non-cricketing countries. We can understand that playing in full-member countries is not possible, but why not otherwise?”

“Why not further the business plan and help franchises become international brands? It’s a win-win.”

IPL 2020 will be the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League. The IPL 2020 will run between 29th March and 24th May. Before the playoff stages, the league stage will be played till 17th May.
