Kolkata Knight Riders Release Vice-Captain Robin Uthappa, Nine Others Ahead Of IPL 2020 auction
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have released as many as 10 players ahead of the IPL 2020 auction. The list of released players also includes vice-captain Robin Uthappa, opener Chris Lynn, senior spinner Piyush Chawla and Carlos Brathwaite. Apart from them, the team has released Anrich Nortje, Joe Denly, KC Cariappa, Matt Kelly, Nikhil Naik, Prithvi Raj Yarra and Shrikant Mundhe.
Uthappa, who was appointed as Dinesh Karthik’s deputy ahead of IPL2018, joined the team back in 2014. He struggled in IPL 2019 and managed 282 runs from 12 matches. He was also dropped from the playing XI and was always in line to be released.
The release of Lynn did come as a big surprise. He was the star with the bat and scored 405 runs with a strike-rate of 139.65. The management probably found his price (9.6 Crores) way too high and might buy him back at the auction.
Brathwaite, the former West Indies’ captain, was bought by the franchise for Rs 5 Crore but he wasn’t given enough chances. He just played two matches and didn’t have much to do in the tournament.
The team badly missed a key spinner and pacers during the course of the tournament. Chawla and Kuldeep Yadav failed to do the job while the team did not have a lead pacer in the squad during IPL 2019. Still, KKR managed to win six out of 14 matches but missed the playoffs berth on NRR.
Dinesh Karthik’s retention means he will continue to lead the team. Like many other franchises, KKR also have a new coaching staff. Brendon McCullum is team’s head coach. He will be assisted by Kyle Mills and David Hussey.
