India has been playing International Cricket since the year 1932 and till 2015 India has seen many captains, be it in Test Cricket, ODI Cricket or T20 Cricket. Team India has seen many leaders, leading the team over 80 years of cricketing history.

While there have been 37 captains over the past 83 years. First five captains in the list have been the leaders of the team for almost 35 years. When we take a look at number of matches captained by each player then it is MS Dhoni topping the list with 279 matches, not taking away the fact that the number of matches being played today is lot more when compared to matches played before the year 2000.
Other captains that have captained India for 100 or more matches are – M Azharuddin, Sourav Ganguly, Kapil Dev and Rahul Dravid. Arguably they are the best captains in Indian cricket history.
Virat Kohli who is considered to the future captain of the Indian ODI team and is currently the captain of Indian test team has also captained the side for 19 matches so far and soon we would see him rise high in this list as well.
