Australia women’s captain Meg Lanning has now set her eyes on 2022 after the ICC Women’s World Cup 2021 got postponed. She was disappointed with ICC’s postponement decision. but supports the decision because of the prevailing circumstances across the globe.

Last month, ICC decided to postpone the Women’s World Cup 2021 scheduled in February-March in New Zealand although the COVID-19 cases in the hosting nation were under control.

The governing council opined that they had postponed the tournament to give enough preparatory time to the teams which they had lost because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Earlier this year, Meg Lanning guided the team to their fifth T20 World Cup victory after defeating Team India in the grand finale by 85 runs. Since that triumph, her team has not got a competitive match because of the pandemic. Therefore, the Aussie captain was hoping for the World Cup next year but the suspension of the tournament had disappointed her.

“No doubt we were disappointed the World Cup got pushed back by a year; we were gearing up for that as a bit of light at the end of the tunnel but at the same time we understand the decision. There’s so much that goes into those things and probably a lot we don’t know or understand and that’s the decision the ICC has made,” Meg Lanning was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

Now, Lanning is looking forward to 2022 when the teams will play three major events- the rescheduled ODI World Cup, T20 World Cup in South Africa and the Commonwealth Games.

She expressed that 2022 is going to be a massive year for them. She added that her team would start the preparation for all the impending events with the upcoming series against New Zealand.

“Now we’re just looking towards 2022, which is going to be a massive year for us and could potentially be a couple of world tournaments in there and a Commonwealth Games. So that’s something we’re looking forward to and we’ll get started with this series coming up and then build toward 2022,” Meg Lanning added.

Australia and New Zealand will play ODI and T20I series in September. After this, they would play in the Women’s Big Bash league scheduled from 17th October.
