The 28-year-old Test opening batsman Mayank Agarwal has recently replaced the injured opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan for the upcoming home ODI series against Windies. He has recently revealed how he handles well the formats changing.
Since his Test debut in last Boxing Day Test match at Melbourne, Mayank Agarwal has gained the full attention in Indian cricket. The right-handed batsman has played nine Tests where he has scored 872 runs with an incredible average of 67.07.
Just like the first-class cricket, Mayank Agarwal also impressed with his consistent List A cricket form. In 2017/18 Vijay Hazare Trophy, he finished as the leading run-scorer after scoring a whopping 723 runs with an incredible average of 90.37. The right-handed batsman smashed three centuries and four half-centuries in that tournament. Despite these top performances, he hasn’t made his ODI debut yet.
In a much surprising way, Mayank Agarwal replaced the injured all-rounder Vijay Shankar during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. However, he wasn’t even in the list of standby players for that tournament. Though he didn’t play a game in that tournament, the national selectors gave a big hint of his future selection in this format.
In the Deodhar Trophy 2019/20, Mayank Agarwal was the second most run-scorer as he scored 148 runs (average 74.00) for India C, including a century. While he is very consistent with the bat as his List A batting average is 50.90, the selectors have chosen his name as the replacement of injured Shikhar Dhawan for the upcoming ODI series against Windies.
It’s easy to switch formats if your game-plan is clear – Mayank Agarwal
Like every season, Mayank Agarwal has once again handled switching formats of this season finely. He has clarified that the basics mindset remains the same, which makes his game-plan clear.
Mayank recently told Chahal TV, “The more I play like this, the better it is for me as a cricketer because I rather play cricket than not play cricket. When it comes to mindset (switching formats), the basics remain the same. It’s easy to switch formats if your game-plan is clear and your understanding of the game is clear.”
Mayank Agarwal has also clarified that he always focuses on contributing to the team in every possible way.
He added, “Regardless of wherever I play, I always think about how I can become an asset to my team and how I can contribute to the team. Even if I don’t score runs with the bat, I think about contributing on the field, bringing in more energy on the field.”
Mayank Agarwal has also clarified that his attitude is to win every match and tournament. He believes that this attitude helps him to perform better.
He said, “I want to win each and every match, each and every tournament. When you come in with that attitude, your mindset will be good. There’s no guarantee that you’ll get the results 100 percent but you will be giving yourselves a good chance to perform.”
The three-match ODI series between India and Windies will begin on 15th December at Chennai.
