The Indian opener Prithvi Shaw became the second youngest Indian batsman to score a fifty in the New Zealand conditions. Former legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar is the youngest Indian to score a fifty on the New Zealand soil. Sachin had scored a fifty in Napier in 1990 when he was only 16 years 291 days old whereas Shaw achieved the same in 20 years 112 days.
Former Indian batsman Atul Wassan had scored a fifty in New Zealand when he was 21 years and 336 days old. Meanwhile, New Zealand captain Kane Williamson once again won the toss and decided to bowl first in the second Test match. The hosts once again got off to a bad start as Mayank Agarwal was dismissed for only seven runs.
Shaw was flawless.
New Zealand’s pack leader Trent Boult was able to get the ball back into the right-hander and plumbed him in front of the wickets. Agarwal decided to review but it was to no avail. Subsequently, Prithvi Shaw played his natural game and completed his fifty with a six. Shaw and Pujara added 50 runs for the second wicket alliance with the former dominating the scoring.
Shaw had a chance to make a big one but he went for the expensive drive and Tom Latham took a brilliant one-handed catch at second slip. Kohli once again struggled to get going and he was plumbed in front of the wickets.
India is once again on the ropes.
Tim Southee was able to get the ball back into the talisman batsman after setting up Kohli with the away swingers and Kohli was caught on the crease. The Indian captain decided to go for the review but once again it was dead.
Southee also got his second wicket of the day when vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane went for the drive but got an outside edge which was taken nicely by Ross Taylor, at the first slip.
