Prithvi Shaw has pipped the likes of Mayank Agarwal and Shubman Gill to earn a maiden ODI call-up for the three-match ODI series against New Zealand. The right-handed batsman is the only surprise addition to the squad as all other members have been retained. The only player to miss out on a place is Shikhar Dhawan, who has been ruled out of the complete tour due to a shoulder issue. He has been replaced by Sanju Samson for five T20Is.
Shaw, a capped player in the longest format, has played two Tests so far. He was to play the series against Australia but was ruled out due to injury. Later, BCCI’s ban kept him out but Shaw made a strong comeback in domestic cricket to make it to India A squad.
The right-handed batsman recently struck a quick-fire 150 off 100 in the first practice match against New Zealand XI and was handed a debut ODI call-up just a couple of days. His addition to the ODI squad also means that Shaw will not play two first-class matches, which hints that Gill might keep his place in the Test squad as the reserve opener.
It is highly likely that Shaw might also make his ODI debut right in the first ODI as KL Rahul has been given the wicket-keeper’s and finisher’s role.
Contrary to reports, Suryakumar Yadav has not been called into the ODI squad as Kedar Jadhav continues to keep his spot. There was no comeback for Hardik Pandya as well. He has started training under Rahul Dravid and his team at NCA.
The three ODIs of the series will be played on February 5, 8 and 11 in Hamilton, Auckland and Mount Maunganui, respectively.
