Robin Uthappa Yet To Decide His Signing With Kerala For Domestic Stint

Discarded Indian batsman Robin Uthappa, who has left his state-side Karnataka acrimoniously after being dropped in Ranji Trophy’s quarter-final game against Tamil Nadu, before being axed in the 15-member squad for the Mushtaq Ali Twenty20 Trophy 2017, is likely to found a new home in domestic circuit with Kerala, but is yet to decide about his signing which has further left Kerala Cricket Association’s offer in a fix.

As the domestic preparations are into full swing, the reports revealed Kerala state Association top brass and Uthappa are yet to reach the final agreement, as the batsman revealed he will respond in August about his availability.

The secretary for KCA Jayesh George further stated Uthappa has confirmed through an email about the offer from the authorities, as he is enjoying the vacations abroad.

“He [Robin Uthappa] is currently on vacation overseas and he sent a mail yesterday (Tuesday) saying he can confirm one way or another only in August,” George was quoted as saying by Indian Express.

The 31-year-old Uthappa has put an end to his 15-year tie-up with Karnataka which further saw him receiving the NOC from KSCA secretary Sudhakar Road to play for the state.

Having gone through a detailed discussion Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) were expecting a straightaway nod from Uthappa after the wicket-keeper batsman received a No Objection Certificate from Karnataka State Cricket Association last week.

George reiterated the management of Kerala has thoroughly discussed the roping of a right-handed batsman.

“We were in talks with him for the last few months,” George added.

Having the first preference as Uthappa, George feels the side would want to rope him as early as possible while adding the team has to prepare for the Ranji Trophy season, as he further talked about the repercussion if the batsman would reject the offer in August.

“I don’t think we can wait. What if we wait till August and he gets back to say he doesn’t want to play for us? That will be very bad preparation for us,” George asserted.

It’s pertinent to note, Kerala team is enjoying the training under the tutelage of Dav Whatmore, who has mentored Bangladesh national team in the recent past.

Moreover, the management would be aiming to have Uthappa onboard, as the Kerala team is scheduled to feature in Dr Captain K Thimmappiah Memorial tournament which will kick-start in July.

Interestingly, Uthappa has asked for some major requirements for what the management of Kerala is struggling to meet the demands.

The selectors are expected to take a decision on Uthappa soon, as the panel is meeting Whatmore in a bid to strengthen the batting department.

After making his first-class debut in 2002-03, Uthappa has featured in 130 matches in which he has amassed 8793 runs at an average of 41.28. He has smashed 21 hundred and 48 fifties.
