ToggleOn Thursday (1st October) evening, Rohit Sharma became the third batsman to score 5000 runs in Indian Premier League (IPL) history. However, the five-time IPL winner Rohit is the slowest batsman to complete 5000 IPL runs.
Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Rohit Sharma reached this milestone during the 13th match of the IPL 2020, where they were facing KL Rahul-led Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) at Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium (Abu Dhabi).
Rohit Sharma completed 5000 IPL runs in 187th IPL innings
Before this match, Rohit Sharma (4998 runs) was two runs behind to complete 5000 IPL runs. While Mumbai Indians captain Rohit lost the toss in this match, KXIP captain KL Rahul sent them to bat first. In the first innings of this 13th match of the IPL 2020, the right-handed batsman Rohit reached the 5000 IPL runs mark after hitting a four to Mohammed Shami on the seventh ball of the match. It was his 192nd IPL match and 187th IPL innings.
Earlier, in the opening match of the IPL 2019 (against Royal Challengers Bangalore at Chennai on 23rd March 2019), Chennai Super Kings (CSK) starrer Suresh Raina created history by becoming the first batsman to score 5000 IPL runs. The left-handed batsman reached that milestone in 173 innings, while it was his 177th IPL match.
Just five days later (28th March 2019), during the match between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Mumbai Indians (MI) at Bengaluru, RCB skipper Virat Kohli became the second but fastest batsman to complete 5000 IPL runs. It was the 157th IPL innings and 165th IPL match for the right-handed batsman Virat Kohli.
So, Rohit Sharma becomes the slowest among the three Indian batsmen to complete 5000 runs in IPL history.
