Shreyas Iyer’s shoulder injury in Tuesday’s ODI will keep him out of the entire edition of the impending IPL 2021. This was confirmed by Delhi Capitals Co-owner Parth Jindal.

Though the BCCI is yet to give an official statement, it is learned from reliable sources that Delhi Capital’s skipper Shreyas Iyer’s scan reports have shown a tear which may force him to go for surgery, which will effectively rule him out of the upcoming IPL 2021.

Shreyas Iyer To Miss IPL 2021 As Co-owner Parth Jindal Felt Devastated And Gutted

Shreyas Iyer, a veteran of 79 IPL matches has amassed exactly 2200 runs averaging 31.42. He led last season’s runner-up Delhi Capitals from the front scoring 519 runs from 17 appearances averaging 34.6.

“Absolutely devastated and gutted for our skipper Shreyas Iyer – stay strong captain – hope for a very quick recovery. Have full faith that you will come back even stronger from this. India needs you in the T20 World Cup ” Jindal tweeted.

BCCI is yet to give an official statement, but it is learned that Shreyas Iyer’s scan reports have shown a tear which may force him to go for surgery. Shreyas Iyer had fallen badly on his left shoulder while attempting to stop a Jonny Bairstow stroke in the circle and could take no further part in the 1st ODI as he hobbled off to undergo scans.

From India’s 18-member squad, Shreyas Iyer’s unavailability could offer Suryakumar Yadav a chance to make his ODI debut in the next match on Friday.

Suryakumar Yadav has played two T20I innings. He has scored 89 runs at an average of 44.50 and a strike-rate of 185.41. Suryakumar Yadav hit his maiden fifty in international cricket, in only his 2nd match in Indian Blues after not getting a chance to bat in his debut game-the 2nd T20I of the series. The right-handed swashbuckling batsman played three games and hit 57 and 32 in the 4th and 5th T20I respectively.

Rishabh Pant, Shikhar Dhawan, Ravichandran Ashwin, And Steve Smith Among Candidates Captaining The Delhi Capitals In Skipper Shreyas Iyer’s Absence

In the skipper’s absence, Rishabh Pant, DC’s vice-captain last year could take over. Although the franchise also has other captainship options in opener Shikhar Dhawan, off-spin all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin, and Australian batsman Steve Smith, who was picked this year from the auction pool. Shikhar Dhawan stood by as captain in Shreyas Iyer’s absence in UAE when Rishabh Pant did not make the playing eleven. Steve Smith too, may not be an automatic pick in the playing eleven.

A lot of pre-series talk was doing the rounds about how ill-timed the ODI series is, and with four on-field injuries, two each to India and England in the first ODI, it only adds more fuel to the raging debate. Apart from Shreyas Iyer, Indian vice-captain Rohit Sharma, England captain Eoin Morgan and Sam Billings were the others injured.

Rohit Sharma’s injury, after being hit on the right elbow by a rising Mark Wood delivery, is known to be “not as serious”. But franchises will be anxiously watching the progress of Eoin Morgan, who leads KKR, and who split the webbing between his right thumb and index finger while fielding and needed four stitches.

Eoin Morgan did head out to bat during his team’s 66-run loss in the series opener. Sam Billings, who will also play for DC in IPL 2021 after being signed in the auction, sprained his collar bone when making a dive to stop a boundary. He came out to bat despite the injury during England’s innings. The IPL is set to begin on April 9.

In the 1st ODI, India scored 317/5 with Shikhar Dhawan top-scoring with 98 and valuable fifties from Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, and Krunal Pandya. England managed 251 in reply with debutant Prasidh Krishna accounting for 4 wickets.
