Shubman Gill scored a blistering double-century to ensure that he keeps his place in the Test squad for the upcoming two-match series. The double-century has come just before the selectors name the Test squad. There were reports that KL Rahul might make his comeback but that will not be the case now.

Rahul’s white-ball form made him favourite to replace Gill but India A player came up with a double-century at the right time. It is now almost impossible for the selection panel to take a call on him and Rahul might have to return to play Ranji Trophy following the ODI series.

Coming in to bat at number four with India A two down for 59, Gill added 167 runs for the third wicket with Priyank Panchal, who also scored a century. Gill continued to pile on runs and completed his century off 185 balls. He added to the misery of the home team by converting his century into a double-ton to lead India’s charge against a huge total.

Batting first, India A were dismissed for 216. New Zealand A rode on a 196 from Dane Cleaver to score 562/7. Mark Chapman also contributed to the total with a century.

India A had to avoid a defeat here but they bounced back in style and only lost three wickets in 101.1 overs. The match ended in a draw with NZ A holding the first-innings lead.

Apart from Gill, captain Hanuma Vhari also scored a century. He will be part of the Test squad but might not get to play.

The second unofficial Test match will be played at Bert Sutcliffe Oval, Lincoln from February 7. Likes of Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara, R Ashwin and Wriddhiman Saha will be part of the match.
