Sourav Ganguly Speaks About The Comparison Of Virat Kohli And Steven Smith
After Steven Smith’s phenomenal batting performances in the Ashes 2019, once again the debate has opened up – who is the best among Virat Kohli and Steven Smith. Recently, the former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly has also faced the same question.
Undoubtedly, the Indian captain Virat Kohli is the very consistent batsman in every format. However, recently, the Australian cricketer Steven Smith has taken his batting level in new domination, especially in Test cricket.
After Smith received that one-year suspension from March 2018, Kohli became the no.1-ranked Test batsman. Before that suspension, Smith was holding the no.1 ranking of Test batting. However, after returning to Test cricket by completing the suspension period, Smith took only three matches to surpass Kohli and retain his no.1 position of the Test batting rankings.
Kohli is currently the no.1-ranked ODI batsman and no.2-ranked Test batsman.
Meanwhile, Smith returned to the Test cricket after 16 months through the Ashes 2019. The Australian right-handed batsman scored 774 runs in seven innings of Ashes 2019 with an incredible average of 110.57. It was the most runs for a batsman in the 21st century Test series history. During this series, Smith scored 144, 142, 92, 211, 82, 80 and 23 runs respectively.
On the sidelines of Tata Steel Kolkata 25K launch, Sourav Ganguly said according to IANS, “These are questions not to be answered. How does it matter? It’s about performance. Virat is the best in the world at the moment. So that’s what makes us happy.”
Talking about Steven Smith, Ganguly has pointed out his 26 Test centuries.
He added, “His records speak for itself… 26 Test hundreds which is a phenomenal record.”
After playing 124 Test innings, Smith has hit 26 Test centuries. Meanwhile, Kohli has hit 25 Test centuries in 135 Test innings.
Sourav Ganguly spoke about his coaching future
The 47-year-old Sourav Ganguly also faced the question of whether he would wish to become the next head coach of the national team.
He replied, “Let one coach finish, then we will think about the other coach.
“In any case I am already a coach. I look after the Delhi Capitals in the IPL. In my first season last year, they did well. They went to the semifinals from being last for last seven years so it’s been good.”
In IPL 2019, Sourav Ganguly was the team advisor of Delhi Capitals (DC). Since 2012, it was the first time when the Delhi franchise qualified for the playoffs. Finally, they finished in the third position in IPL 2019 which was their joint-best IPL record.
Ganguly also feels that India are the favourites to win both the home T20I and Test series against South Africa. In this September-October, India are busy to play against South Africa at home in the three-match T20I series and three-match Test series.
