Statistical Review: Australia vs Pakistan 2017 – Fifth ODI

On Thursday, Australia won the final ODI of the 5-match ODI series against Pakistan at Adelaide Oval. After winning the toss, Australia decided to bat first and made a mammoth total of 369/7 in 50 overs.

In reply, Pakistan were bundled out for 312 (in 49.1 overs). With this victory by 57 runs, Australia clinched the ODI series by 4-1.

Pakistan – 312 in 49.1 overs (Babar Azam 100, Sharjeel Khan 79, Mitchell Starc 4/42)

Result – Australia won by 57 runs

Some of the statistical highlights of the match are given below:

  1. Australian opening batsmen David Warner and Travis Head put an incredible 284-runs partnership for the opening wicket. Here are some important stats of this mammoth partnership:

i) It is the 5th highest partnership for any wicket in ODI history.

ii) It is Australia’s highest ODI partnership for any wicket. Australia’s previous highest ODI partnership was 260 by David Warner and Steven Smith (for 2nd wicket) against Afghanistan at Perth on 4th March 2015.

iii) It is the 2nd highest ODI partnership for the opening wicket. The highest opening partnership in ODI is 286 between Sri Lankan openers Sanath Jayasuriya and Upul Tharanga (against England at Leeds on 1st July 2006).

iv) It is the 2nd highest ODI partnership for any wicket on the Australian soil. The best is for 372 runs between West Indies batsmen Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels (for 2nd wicket) against Zimbabwe at Canberra on 24th February 2015.

v) Also it is the highest ODI partnership for any wicket against Pakistan. The previous best ODI partnership against Pakistan was 248 (for 2nd wicket) by English batsmen Alex Hales and Joe Root at Nottingham on 30th August 2016.

 

  1. Australian opening batsman David Warner scored a brilliant 179 runs in this ODI. Here are some important stats for this innings:

i) It is the highest ODI individual score by an Australian batsman against Pakistan. The previous best was 146 by Matthew Hayden (at Nairobi, Gym on 30th August 2002).

ii) It is the 3rd highest ODI individual score by an Australian batsman. The top two in this list are: 185* by Shane Watson (against Bangladesh at Dhaka on 11th April 2011) and 181* by Matthew Hayden (against New Zealand at Hamilton on 20th February 2007)

iii) It is the 2nd highest ODI individual score by a batsman against Pakistan. Indian batsman Virat Kohli is at the top of this list with 183 runs at Dhaka on 18th March 2012.

iv) It is the 2nd highest ODI individual score by a batsman on the Australian soil. The best is 215 by Chris Gayle against Zimbabwe at Canberra on 24th February 2015.

v) It was David Warner’s fifth 150+ score in his ODI career. It is the joint highest no.of 150+ ODI score by a batsman. Indian legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar had also same no.of (5) 150+ score in his ODI career.

vi) It was the 6th ODI century for David Warner in the current international cricket season (2016/17). It is the joint highest no.of ODI century by a batsman in an international cricket season. Former Sri Lankan wicketkeeper-batsman Kumar Sangakkara had also hit 6 ODI centuries in 2014/15.

 

  1. Australian openers David Warner (179) and Travis Head (128) scored total 307 runs in this ODI. It is the 2nd highest aggregated ODI score by the openers in an ODI innings. The highest in this list is 327 by New Zealand opening batsmen James Marshall (161) and Brandon McCullum (166) against Ireland at Aberdeen on 1st July 2008.

 

  1. In this match, Australia made 369/7 in 50 overs. It is the highest ODI total for Australia against Pakistan. Australia’s previous highest ODI total against Pakistan was 353/6 in the previous match of this series (at Sydney on 22nd January 2017).

Also it was the 4th highest ODI total for Australia on the Australian soil.

 

  1. Pakistan pacer Hasan Ali was very expensive in this ODI as he conceded 100 runs (9-0-100-2) in this match. It is the 2nd highest runs conceded by a Pakistan bowler in an ODI match. The highest runs conceded by a Pakistan bowler in an ODI match is 110 by Wahab Riaz (10-0-110-0) against England at Nottingham on 30th August 2016.

Meanwhile, it is the 3rd highest conceded runs by a bowler against Australia in an ODI match. The top two in this list are: 102 by Indian pacer Vinay Kumar (at Bangalore on 2nd November 2013) and 101 by Afghanistan pacer Dawlat Zadran (at Perth on 4th March 2015).

 

  1. Pakistan batsmen Sharjeel Khan and Babar Azam put 130-runs partnership for the 2nd wicket. It is the highest 2nd wicket ODI partnership for Pakistan on the Australian soil. Previous best was 105 by Zaheer Abbas and Mudassar Nazar against Australia at Sydney on 17th December 1981.

 

  1. Pakistan batsman Babar Azam scored a fitting 100 in this ODI. It is the 2nd ODI century by a Pakistan batsman against Australia on the Australian soil. The first Pakistan batsman was Zaheer Abbas (108) who had done at Sydney on 17th December 1981.

 

  1. Pakistan were bowled out at 312 runs (49.1 overs). It is the second highest ODI total for Pakistan against Australia. Pakistan’s highest ODI total against Australia is 315/8 (50 overs) at Lahore on 10th November 1998.

Also it was Pakistan’s second highest ODI total on the Australian soil. Pakistan’s highest ODI total on the Australian soil is 315/3 against Sri Lanka at Adelaide on 17th February 1990.
