Statistical Review: India vs England – 2nd ODI

On Thursday night, India secured three-match ODI series against England after winning the 2nd ODI at Cuttack. England decided to bowl first after winning the toss. Despite an early top-order collapse, India managed to put a mammoth total of 381 runs (381/6 in 50 overs).

England replied strongly but felt 15-runs short of India’s total. England managed to score 366/8 (50 overs) as India won this match by 15 runs.

With this victory, India is leading three-match ODI series by 2-0.

England – 366/8 in 50 overs (Eoin Morgan 102, Jason Roy 82, Ravichandran Ashwin 3/65)

  1. In this ODI, Indian batsman MS Dhoni completed his 200th ODI sixes. At the end of the match, Dhoni has hit 203 sixes in his ODI career. Dhoni became 5th batsman and 1st Indian batsman to hit 200 or more ODI career sixes. Presently Dhoni is at no.4 in the most no.of ODI six hitters list.

 

  1. Indian batsmen Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni put on an incredible 256-runs partnership for the 4th wicket. Now we look some important stats of this mammoth partnership:

i) It is the second highest 4th wicket partnership in ODI history. The highest 4th wicket partnership in ODI history is 275* between Indian batsmen Mohammad Azharuddin and Ajay Jadeja (against Zimbabwe at Cuttack on 9th April 1998).

ii) It is India’s 5th highest ODI partnership for all wickets.

iii) Also this partnership is India’s second highest 4th wicket ODI partnership.

iv) This partnership is the 2nd highest ODI partnership for any team against England. The highest in this list is 286 runs between Sanath Jayasuriya and Upul Tharanga (Sri Lanka) for the opening wicket at Leeds on 1st July 2006.

 

  1. Yuvraj Singh scored 150 in this ODI. It is the highest ODI score by an Indian batsman against England. The previous best was 138* by Yuvraj Singh at Rajkot on 14th November 2008.

 

  1. Yuvraj Singh hit 21 fours in this ODI which is joint highest no.of fours hit by an individual batsman against England in an ODI innings. Previously, Viv Richards (West Indies) and Virender Sehwag (India) had also hit same no. of fours against England in an ODI innings.

 

  1. Indian wicketkeeper-batsman MS Dhoni scored 134 runs in this ODI. Dhoni became the first Indian wicketkeeper-batsman to score an ODI century against England. The previous highest score by an Indian wicketkeeper-batsman against England was 96 by MS Dhoni (at Jamshedpur on 12th April 2006).

 

  1. Indian wicketkeeper-batsman MS Dhoni hit 6 sixes in this ODI. Dhoni became joint highest no. of six hitters in an ODI innings as a wicketkeeper-batsman against England. Brendon McCullum (New Zealand) and Quinton de Kock (South Africa) had also hit 6 sixes in an ODI innings as a wicketkeeper-batsman against England.

 

  1. Indian batsmen Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni both are 35+ years old and both made centuries in this ODI. Before them, there were two incidents where two 35+ years old batsmen hit centuries in the same ODI innings. On both the previous occasions, the batsmen were former Sri Lankan batsmen Tillakaratne Dilshan and Kumar Sangakkara (against Bangladesh at MCG on 26th February 2015 and Scotland at Hobart on 11th March 2015).

 

  1. India scored 381/6 in 50 overs. It is India’s 2nd highest ODI total against England. India’s highest ODI total against England is 387/5 (50 overs) at Rajkot on 14th November 2008.

 

  1. Taking 2 wickets, England bowler Liam Plunket conceded 91 runs in this ODI. It is joint most runs conceded in an ODI innings by an English bowler against India. James Anderson (9.5-0-91-1) had also conceded same runs against India at Bangalore on 27th February 2011.

 

10. 4 English bowlers (Chris Woakes 4/60, Jake Ball 0/80, Liam Plunket 2/91 and Ben Stokes 0/79) conceded 60 or more runs during India’s innings. It was the 5th time where 4 or more English bowlers conceded 60 or more runs in the same ODI innings.

However, it was the second time where 4 English bowlers conceded 60 or more runs in the same ODI innings against India. The first one was at Rajkot on 14th November 2008.

 

11. England skipper Eoin Morgan scored 102 runs in this ODI. In a losing cause during a chase, it is the 2nd highest score by an England skipper. In this list, the highest ODI score by an England skipper is 105 by Andrew Strauss (against West Indies at Providence on 22nd March 2009).

 

12. Chasing the target, England scored 366/8 (50 overs) at the end. It is the highest ODI total for England against India. England’s previous highest ODI total against India was 350/6 (50 overs), which they had made in the previous encounter of this series between these two teams.

 

13. Just like English bowlers, 4 Indian bowlers (Bhuvneshwar Kumar 1/63, Jasprit Bumrah 2/81, Hardik Pandya 0/60 and Ravichandran Ashwin 3/65) also conceded 60 or more runs during England’s innings. It was the 7th time where 4 or more Indian bowlers conceded 60 or more runs in the same ODI innings.

However, it was the first time where 4 Indian bowlers conceded 60 or more runs in the same ODI innings against England.

 

14. Total 8 bowlers conceded 60 or more runs in this ODI. It was the 5th time in ODI history where 8 or more bowlers conceded 60 or more runs in an ODI match.

 

15. Total 4 England (Jason Roy 82, Joe Root 54, Eoin Morgan 102 and Moeen Ali 55) batsmen scored 50+ runs during chasing the total, but still England lost the game. During an ODI chase, it is the second time when 4 batsmen scored 50+ runs in an ODI innings but till lost the game. The first one was for Pakistan against England at Lahore on 10th December 2005.
