Statistical Review: South Africa vs Sri Lanka – Day 1 Of The Second Test

On the opening day of the of the 2nd Test between South Africa and Sri Lanka at Cape Town, the hosts South Africa survived an early top-order collapse and made the day their own. After winning the toss, visitors Sri Lanka decided to bowl first. At the stumps on day 1, South Africa were 297/6.

Here are some statistical highlights of day 1 of the 2nd Test:

  1. South African opening batsman Dean Elgar scored a brilliant century as he was dismissed after scoring 129 runs. Some important stats of his innings are as follows:

i) After completing a century, Dean Elgar became the second South African batsman to score more than one Test century against Sri Lanka. This century was Dean Elgar’s second Test century against Sri Lanka (first was 103 runs at Galle in 2014). Only Daryll Cullinan (5 Test century against Sri Lanka) is the other South African batsman to score more than one Test century against Sri Lanka.

ii) After completing his century, Dean Elgar became the first South African opening batsman to score more than one Test century against Sri Lanka.

iii) Dean Elgar’s 129 run innings is the second highest score by a South African opening batsman against Sri Lanka in a Test innings. The highest score at here is 180 by Gary Kirsten at Durban in 2000.

 

  1. South African opening batsmen Stephen Cook and Dean Elgar scored 0 and 129 runs respectively. It is 8th time for South Africa where their one opening batsman scored a duck and another opening batsman scored a century in the same Test innings. However, this happened for the first time against Sri Lanka.

 

  1. During the day, Sri Lankan left-arm spinner Rangana Herath picked up only one wicket and that was South African skipper Faf du Plessis. du Plessis’ dismissal was Herath’s 355th Test wicket which is the joint second highest no. of Test wicket by a Sri Lankan bowler. Former Sri Lankan pacer Chaminda Vaas also picked up 355 Test wickets. Sri Lanka’s highest Test wicket-taker is Muttiah Muralitharan who sits on top with 795 Test wickets for his country (5 more Test wickets for ICC XI).

 

  1. At the end of the day, South African wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock remained unbeaten on 68. It is the highest score by a South African wicketkeeper-batsman against Sri Lanka in the first innings of a Test match. The previous highest was 62 by David Richardson at Colombo (PSS) in 1993.
