Stats: Bowlers Who Have Taken Two Hat-Tricks In One Match

As per record books, there are only eight incidents until the 7th November 2017 where a bowler had claimed two hat-tricks in a cricket match. All of these incidents happened in the first-class cricket barring one which occurred in Test cricket.

In this article, we briefly detail those rare incidents in cricket history.

 

Mitchell Starc (New South Wales vs. Western Australia at Sydney in November 2017)

About the bowler: Australian left-arm pacer Mitchell Starc is one of the most dangerous bowlers in the international cricket. Until the 7th November 2017, Starc played 36 Tests, 68 ODIs and 22 T20Is where he had taken 148, 134 and 30 wickets respectively.

 

The incident of two hat-tricks: During the match between New South Wales and Western Australia in November 2017, Starc claimed the hat-trick in each innings. In the first innings, New South Wales pacer Starc completed his first hat-trick in this match after dismissing Jason Behrendorff, David Moody and Simon Mackin on three consecutive deliveries.

In the second innings, Starc claimed another hat-trick after dismissing Jason Behrendorff, David Moody, and Jonathan Wells consecutively.

Starc took total four wickets (4/56) in the first innings and three wickets (3/41) in the second innings. New South Wales won the match by 171 runs

Amin Lakhani (Combined XI vs. Indians at Multan in October 1978)    

 

About the bowler: Slow left-arm orthodox bowler Amin Lakhani was a regular player in Pakistan’s domestic cricket. He had played total 136 first-class matches, and 72 List A matches where he had taken 466 wickets and 86 wickets respectively. However, he never played an international cricket match.

 

 

The incident of two hat-tricks: It was the match between Combined XI and Indians at Multan in October 1978 where Amin Lakhani had claimed two hat-tricks. Playing for Combined XI, Amin Lakhani had claimed his first hat-trick during the first-innings after dismissing Karsan Ghavri, Srinivasaraghavan Venkataraghavan and Bharath Reddy in the three consecutive deliveries.

In the second innings, Lakhani had repeated one of the most respectable feats for the bowlers after dismissing Mohinder Amarnath, Syed Kirmani, and Kapil Dev. In that match, Lakhani had taken 6 wickets in each innings (6/58 and 6/80), but Indians had still managed to claim a victory by two wickets.   

Joginder Singh Rao (Services vs. Northern Punjab at Amritsar in November 1963)

 

About the bowler: Right-arm medium pacer Joginder Singh Rao had a very short but very impactful career in the cricket. He had played only five first-class matches where he had grabbed 21 wickets including three hat-tricks.

Joginder had claimed his first hat-trick during his debutant first-class match (against Jammu and Kashmir). He had claimed the two hat-tricks in one match during his second first-class game.

 

The incident of two hat-tricks: Services bowler Joginder was playing only his second first-class game and that was against Northern Punjab at Amritsar in November 1963. During that game, he had claimed both the hat-tricks in the second innings. Suresh Sharma, Ashok Khanna, and Bhupinder Singh were the first bunches of his hat-trick while Rajinder Kale, Ramnath Paul, and Bishen Singh Bedi were the next bunches of his hat-trick.

Joginder had wicket-less (0/8) in the first innings while he had claimed seven wickets (7/30) in the second innings. Services had won that match by an innings and 68 runs.

Roy Jenkins (Worcestershire vs. Surrey at Worcester in August 1949)

 

About the bowler: Roy Jenkins was a leg-break googly bowler who had played nine Test matches for England and had taken total 32 wickets in his Test career.

In his 386 long first-class careers, Roy Jenkins had taken 1,309 wickets.

 

The incident of two hat-tricks: During the match between Worcestershire vs. Surrey at Worcester in August 1949, Roy Jenkins had taken the hat-trick in both innings.

His first innings bowling figure was 6/112 and second innings bowling figure was 5/54 as his team Worcestershire had won the match by 109 runs.

Charlie Parker (Gloucestershire vs. Middlesex at Bristol in August 1924)

About the bowler: Charlie Parker was a slow left-arm orthodox bowler who had a long distinguished career in first-class cricket. He had played the only Test match for England where he had picked up two wickets.

In his 635 first-class matches, Charlie Parker had taken total 3,278 wickets which is the third most first-class wickets for a bowler.

 

The incident of two hat-tricks: During the match between Gloucestershire and Middlesex at Bristol in August 1924, Gloucestershire spinner Charlie Parker had claimed the hat-trick in both innings.

In the first innings, his three consecutive victims were Patsy Hendren, Sir Gubby Allen, and Frank Mann.

In the second innings, his three consecutive victims were Frank Mann, John Guise, and Nigel Haig.

In both innings, Charlie had taken seven wickets each (7/30 and 7/101). In the low-scoring contest, where his team Gloucestershire had been bundled out for just 31 in the first innings, they had still won the match by 61 runs.

Jimmy Matthews (Australia v South Africa at Manchester in May 1912)

About the bowler: Leg-spinner Jimmy Matthews had played 8 Tests for Australia while he had played total 67 first-class matches. He had taken total 177 wickets in the first-class career including 16 Test wickets. He is the only bowler to claim two hat-tricks in international cricket.

 

The incident of two hat-tricks: During a Test match between Australia and South Africa in May 1912, Australian leg-spinner Jimmy Matthews claimed the hat-trick in both innings.

In the first innings, he had dismissed Rolland Beaumont, Sid Pegler and Tommy Ward in the three successive deliveries. In the second innings, he had dismissed Herbie Taylor, Herbie Taylor and Tommy Ward in the three successive deliveries.

Jimmy had claimed both the hat-tricks on the same day and none of those dismissals had required any assistance of the fielders.

Jimmy’s first innings bowling figures was 3/16 while his second innings bowling figure was 3/38.  Australia won the Test match by an innings and 88 runs.

Albert Trott (Middlesex vs. Somerset at Lord’s in May 1907)

About the bowler:  Albert Trott was a right-arm slow bowler who had played international cricket for both Australia and England. Including 5 Tests, he had played total 375 first-class matches where he had taken 1,674 wickets including 26 wickets in Tests.

He was also a handy batsman who had scored over 10,000 runs in first-class cricket including eight centuries and 44 half-centuries.

 

The incident of two hat-tricks: It was the match between Middlesex and Somerset at Lord’s in May 1907, where Albert Trott had claimed two hat-tricks during Somerset’s second innings. His first set of victims were Talbot Lewis, Massey Poyntz, and Talbot Lewis while Albert had converted that four in four consecutive deliveries after dismissing Ernie Robson in the fourth delivery.

Albert’s second set of victims were Osbert Mordaunt, Archie Wickham, and Alfred Bailey.

Albert was wicket-less (0/10) in the first innings while he had claimed seven wickets (7/20) in the second innings. His side Middlesex won that match by 166 runs.

Alfred Shaw (Nottinghamshire v Gloucestershire at Nottingham in July-August 1884)

 About the bowler: Alfred Shaw was a right-arm medium bowler who had played 404 first-class matches including 7 Tests that had played for England. He had taken total 2,027 first-class wickets including 12 in the Test career.

He was one the members of the first-ever Test match between Australia and England at Melbourne in March 1877. Apart from that, he bowled the first ever Test delivery while he was also the first batsman to get stump dismissal.

 

The incident of two hat-tricks: In the match between Nottinghamshire and Gloucestershire at Nottingham in July-August 1884, Alfred Shaw had claimed the hat-trick in both innings. In that match, his first innings bowling figure was 8/29 while his second innings bowling figure was 6/36.

Nottinghamshire had won that match by ten wickets.
