Australia’s talisman batsman Steven Smith has put weight behind his Sydney Sixers teammate, Josh Philippe, to represent the national team in all the three forms of the game. The right-handed wicket-keeper batsman has not only impressed with the gloves but also with the bat in the ongoing Big Bash League. Philippe has scored 401 runs in the 14 matches at an average of 36.45 and a strike rate of 126.10.
In fact, it was Steven Smith who suggested Josh Philippe make a move from Perth Scorchers to Sydney Sixers. The right-hander was also roped in by Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL 2020 Auctions for his base price of INR 20 lakhs.
Philippe has shown the right skills.
Steven Smith said as quoted by Statesman,“I thought it was a no-brainer to get an opportunity as a young kid to experience a different environment.
“He has played really well up the top of the order, but he also played really well down lower last year. That’s one of the hottest commodities in T20s.”
Philippe was instrumental in Sixers’ seven-wicket win over Melbourne Renegades after they chased down 176 runs. The opening batsman scored 42-ball 61 whereas Steven Smith continued his red hot form and smashed 66 from 40 balls to get his team over the line.
That's 5️⃣0️⃣ for Philippe and what a way to do it 👏

Smith feels Philippe can play in all the three forms for Australia and he has shown good skills while batting against the fast bowlers. Furthermore, he was able to handle Rashid Khan with guile.
“There’s no reason why he (Philippe) can’t play all three forms for Australia.
“He plays fast bowling really well, we’ve seen him play spin really well with Rashid Khan (earlier this summer). The more he plays and is exposed to pressure situations the more he will improve.”
Josh Philippe will need to continue his purple patch to get the reckoning in the national team. Currently, Tim Paine leads Australia in the Test fold whereas Alex Carey has impressed with his skills in the limited-overs format.
Sydney Sixers are in second place in the ongoing BBL. The knockout stages will begin on 30th January.
