India legend Sunil Gavaskar has defended struggling Rishabh Pant, who has been dealing with criticism from all corners of late. As per Gavaskar, Rishabh is under the scanner because he is doing a thankless job and his lapses are more talked about.

In the T20I series against Bangladesh, Rishabh got few DRS decisions wrong and also bungled while stumping as he collected the ball ahead of the stumps. He redeemed himself later but his performances on the field have put the spotlight on him. Ahead of the third T20I, skipper Rohit Sharma also asked everyone to leave the youngster alone.

“There are two-three thankless jobs in this game. One is the umpires’ job. If he gets nine decisions right but one decision wrong, the wrong one gets talked about. Same thing with the wicket-keepers, they can do 95 percent of the things right but the one miss is talked about,” Gavaskar told PTI.

“Same thing is happening at the moment with Rishabh. His lapses are talked about more when otherwise he is keeping well,” he added.

Rishabh has been under the spotlight right since the day India head coach Ravi Shastri criticised him before the South Africa T20I series. Shastri criticised the youngster for his shot selection and also said that there be a rap on the knuckles, talent or no talent.

Soon, Rishabh was dropped from playing XI in Tests and has been under pressure in T20Is. He has played every white-ball hame since World Cup 2019, in MS Dhoni’s, absence but hasn’t been able to produce results that were expected. With Sanju Samon back in the T20I side, there is every possibility that he might replace Rishabh in the playing XI.

In the third T20I against Bangladesh, Rishabh had his opportunity but he got out on six off nine on the first delivery of 17th over. While keeping wickets, he got a DRS decision wrong.

Sanju Samson

With a no-ready replacement for Dhoni available, the team management is likely to continue with him. Samson has made his comeback but it remains to be seen if he is in the scheme of thing for ODIs. Ishan Kishan could get his maiden call-up should he do well in the domestic season.

In Tests, the presence of Wriddhiman Saha is set to see Rishabh Pant sit out. He was retained in the squad for the Bangladesh Tests but Saha will keep his spot in the playing XI.
