On Sunday, after watching the second ODI game between India and Windies, one would have clearly got the picture that Virat Kohli is persisting with Rishabh Pant at number 4. However, Sunil Gavaskar isn’t impressed with Kohli’s move, as he believes that Rishabh Pant is best suited to number 5 or 6 while Shreyas Iyer could do the job at number 4.
Former skipper Sunil Gavaskar believes Shreyas Iyer is better suited for the number four spot in ODIs than Rishabh Pant and should be given a permanent slot in the Indian middle-order.
Coming into the team after a year, Iyer, who has a couple of the fifties in the five ODIs that he has played, hit a 68-ball 71. It played a crucial role in India’s 59-run win over the West Indies in the second ODI at Port-of-Spain on Sunday.
Rishabh Pant is better like MS Dhoni at number 5 – Sunil Gavaskar
On the other hand, Pant, who continued to bat at No. 4, managed only 20 before playing a horror shot to throw his wicket away. Iyer kept the scorers busy right from the word go and scored 71 at more than a run-a-ball. His well-paced knock had 5 boundaries and a six.
Now, former Indian captain, Sunil Gavaskar has said that he sees Pant more like the successor to MS Dhoni and hence, the management should use him more as a finisher. However, he wants Rishabh at number 4 when top-order bats continuously 40 overs.
“In my view, Rishabh Pant is much better like an MS Dhoni at 5 for 6 as a finisher because that’s where his natural game and natural flair will come into play,” Sunil Gavaskar told the host broadcasters.
“If India get to a great start with Virat Kohli, Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma batting for 40-45 overs, then Pant at No. 4. But if it’s a question of batting for 30-35 overs, then I think it should be Shreyas Iyer at No. 4 and Pant at No. 5,” he added.
Sunil Gavaskar also said Iyer hadn’t done anything wrong to miss the World Cup berth but expressed confidence that he will get a longer run now in ODI cricket. All in all, it was a sweet victory for the Indian team.
