Started four years ago, the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) is certainly becoming bigger with every passing year. The increasing prestige and appeal of the tournament has attracted a host of international talent this season. The current edition, which will commence from June 30, will see some a star-studded contingent of overseas players making their debut in the tournament.
Let us see 6 big names who are making their debut in this edition:
6. Adam Zampa: Guyana Amazon Warriors
After a strong Big Bash League with Melbourne Stars, he made his ODI debut against New Zealand in February and carried on his form into the ICC World T20 for his country.
He was a standout performer for Rising Pune Supergiants in the recent IPL where he hogged the limelight with his variations and control of his attacking and defensive displays under pressure, claiming 12 wickets in five matches. His sensational spell of 6 wickets for 19 runs against Sunrisers Hyderabad made him an instant hit. Certainly an interesting prospect in this year’s edition.
5.Dale Steyn: Jamaica Tallawahs
Having been picked by Jamaica Tallawahs to replace an injured Lasith Malinga, Dale Steyn would like to leave behind the disappointment of a poor IPL behind and start afresh. The ace pacer played just one game for his franchise Rising Pune Supergiants in this year’s IPL. With the West Indies pitches known for assisting the pacers, Steyn would be eager to show that he still has the potential to play in the shortest format of the game.
4. Faf du Plessis: St Kitts and Nevis Patriots:
The star South African batsman had to leave IPL midway after picking an injury. Before that he was Rising Pune Supergiants’ second-highest run-scorer with 206 runs at an average of 34.33 in six matches. After making an impressive comeback in the recently concluded tri-series, he would like to carry on his form in the CPL too.
He has been appointed the captain of St Kitts and Nevis Patriots and with players like Lendl Simmons, Thisara Perera, Carlos Brathwaite, his team has enough firepower to perform well in the tournament.
3. Shane Watson: St Lucia Zouks
After retiring from the game following the conclusion of World t20, the ace Australian all-rounder impressed with the ball playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League, finishing third on the wicket-taking charts with 20 scalps. While he failed to get a big score but played a lot of quickfire innings to help his team get some quick runs.
He would certainly like to carry his strong form with the ball into the Caribbean Premier League when the tournament kicks off.
2. Brendon McCullum: Trinbago Knight Riders
The former Kiwi skipper is undoubtedly one of the biggest stars to watch out for this season. With 352 runs in this year’s IPL, he was one of the main reasons for Gujarat Lions’ brilliant performance this season. Already retired from all the formats, he would like to enjoy his time in the field. Clearly a threat for every bowler out there.
1. AB de Villiers: Barbados Tridents
Undoubtedly the biggest name to feature in CPL this season, AB de Villiers has been signed by defending champions-Barbados Tridents. One of the most dangerous batsman, his addition has certainly boosted Barbados Tridents’ chances of retaining the crown. On a personal front, he would like to leave the disappointment of a poor tri-series behind and score some runs.
