Virat Kohli Suggests An Important Change In World Test Championship Points System
The inaugural ICC World Test Championship (2019-21) has just started and it has majorly got very good support in the cricket world. Indian captain Virat Kohli has recently suggested a crucial change in this Championship points system to make this tournament more competitive.
To make the Test cricket more interesting and challenging, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has introduced the World Test Championship. The inaugural ICC World Test Championship (2019-21) has already begun with the Ashes 2019 in last August.
While the nine top-ranked Test teams are participating in this tournament, seven teams have already started their journey. In this 2019-21 period, each participating team will play six Test series against six different teams. Out of these, three will be home series and three will be away series. Each Test series can be conducted with two to five matches, according to their wish.
The total number of maximum points for each Test series is 120. However, due to the different numbers of matches in each series, the distributions of points for each game are different. The distributions of points are quite simple as each victory in the Test series will provide 120/no. of matches in that particular series.
The detail of distributions of points in ICC World Test Championship is in below
|Matches in series||Points for a win||Points for a tie||Points for a draw||Points for a defeat|
After the conclusion of this league stage, the top two-positioned teams in the final points table will play a one-off final at Lord’s (London) in June 2021.
I’d have asked for double the points for an away test win – Virat Kohli about the points system in World Test Championship
At present, Virat Kohli-led India are leading the points table of the 2019-21 ICC World Test Championship. They are the first side to claim 100 points in this Championship as they have currently gained 160 points. New Zealand and Sri Lanka are in the second and third position respectively as both have managed 60 points. Australia and England are in the next two respective positions with 56 points each.
Before the Pune Test against South Africa, Indian captain Virat Kohli has opened up his view on the points system of ICC World Test Championship. The 30-year-old feels that every team deserves to earn double points for winning each away Test.
Kohli said, “If you’d have asked me to make the points table, I’d have asked for double the points for an away test win.”
India and South Africa are currently busy in the three-match Test series in India. The hosts India won the first Test of this series at Visakhapatnam by 203 runs.
