Watch: Murali Vijay Bats As A Left-Hander Against Ravichandran Ashwin In TNPL
Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is surprising in the ongoing Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) 2019 through his different bowling styles. Now, another Indian cricketer, Murali Vijay has surprised in the same tournament with his left-handed batting.
On Saturday (3rd August), Murali Vijay’s Ruby Trichy Warriors (RTW) met with Ravichandran Ashwin-led Dindigul Dragons (DD). After winning the toss, Ashwin decided to field first. The RTW opener Vijay played a spectacular knock that helped his team to manage 178/3 (20 overs). Vijay just missed his incredible century as he scored 99 runs off 62 balls with seven fours and seven sixes.
Vijay carried his natural right-hand batting in almost the entire game. However, for a few times, he changed his entire batting stance to the left-hand when he faced the DD captain Ashwin.
Murali Vijay – as a left-handed batsman
In the 16th over of that innings, when Ashwin came to bowl him, the set opening batsman Vijay changed his natural batting stance. On the third ball of that over, Vijay took a single after the switching-left-handed batsman had a thick inside edge.
Once again, on the fifth ball of the same over, Vijay batted as a left-hander. This time he pushed that ball to the deep mid-wicket and went for a single. But after watching the bowling end umpire’s signal as a no-ball, he changed his mind from the half-way of the pitch and returned to the strike. Ashwin overstepped that delivery, and that’s why the umpire signalled a no-ball and awarded a free-hit to the batting side.

On the free-hit delivery, Vijay returned to his natural right-handed batting stance and smashed a six. Ashwin delivered a full-toss which Vijay utilised properly.
Vijay lost his wicket on the final over of that innings as he was just one run away from his century. Meanwhile, Ashwin finished that innings with the bowling figures of 4-0-33-0.

However, Vijay’s incredible batting effort went in vain as the DD chased down that target in 19.1 overs after losing five wickets. The opener and wicketkeeper-batsman Narayan Jagadeesan was the hero of that innings. While his all other team members failed to reach the 30-run mark, Jagadeesan hit a century. The 23-year-old remained not out on 105 runs off 60 balls. The right-handed batsman hit 12 fours and four sixes in that innings.
